badlizard (1373), San Diego, California, USA Mar 11, 2008 Updated: Apr 1, 2008from bevmo. Dark mahogany brown with a foamy white head. Amazing nutmeg, spice, and leather aroma. Bright palate. Chocolate, spice, cinnamon, wood, and tobacco taste. A great complex beer. One of the best from Unibroue. GreatLibations (1240), Sasquatcho, Arizona, USA Apr 25, 2008 A cold pour produces a murky greyish brown liquid w/ a tall frothy head that lingers. Lacing is classic.Strong sweet and spicey aromas waft to my nostrils. Ultra full nectar w/ gentle carbonation produces an almost creamy texture. A viscous malt body, a mild sweetness, and gentle bittering comprise the backbone of this monster. It’s so thick I almost sufficate. Nectarine, plumb, hikers dried fruit, banana, troicals, ginger, coriander and allspice. The list goes on and on. Mild cocoa, rootbeer, a defined touch of sweet and sour kiwi essence, and a litle acidity. The finish lingers longingly. I am happy to have met you 17! CapFlu (3242), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Apr 15, 2008 (750ml bottle) Purchased at Brewery Creek in Vancouver for $9.95. Pours a gorgeous lasting head with a deep brown-ruby. Nose of good malt, clove and ginger with date as a base. Flavour is unbelievably good - a return to Unibroue 10 or 11 - full bodied fig dried fruit, red wine, strong barley, green grass with a woody, burnt toast. So nice to see the return of a great Unibroue annual as opposed to those spearmint-crap years... DocLock (3958), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 28, 2008 Bottle from Capone’s. Pours turbid reddish-brown with a huge off-yellow head. Nose is very complex; a mix of rasberry, strawberry, cherry, caramel malt, spicy yeast, port, figs, prunes. Tastes malty, dark fruity, witgh interlaced berries and spicy yeast throughout, plus some port, raisin, and blackberry brandy notes. Very complex, full-bodied palate that evolves nicely over time and shows no hint of heat. This one is outstanding. SDalkoholic (1005), Chula Vista, California, USA May 27, 2008 Bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar. I kept wondering to myself when they would release the next numbered ale on lees, but good for me I found one when I did. A big bold nose of yeasty spices packed with a fruity and undeniable malt aroma. The flavor is so confusing and all over the map I don’t even know where to begin. First, there is the large profile of yeast that ranges from wild farmhouse styled yeast towards a lab created spicy yeast that shows signs of pepper, clove and some kind of green leaf that has been dried and added in addition. There is also a strong dosage of smokey flavor and perhaps a barrel aged wood aftertaste of some sort that causes some scrambled messages to my head. The delivery of alcohol is so strong yet smooth just hits the spot and does the trick making it well worth the price for the bottle. Lastly, the appearance was a dark brown with small signs of sediment showing up towards the end of the bottle, and has a sticky layer of foam that leaves behind a trail of lacing all along the Trappist glass.
