COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.

As testimony to it’s remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

So in 2011, we proudly brought back this French Oak aged, bottle refermented dark ale, with the "Grande Réserve" appellation as a fitting endorsement of it’s exceptional quality for aging. Brewed only once a year, in limited quantities, and individually numbered "brasseur" bottles, this is truly a flavorful delight for the specialty beer enthusiast.

Picked up at Whole Foods Vienna. Tasted while on conference in Tysons Corner / Vienna VA. Tasted in hermetically sealed hotel plastic glasses. Sampled from a 750ml bottle. Aroma has an aged cheese scent, possibly of Parmesan or the like. Large sustained strong brownish white head. Flavor is intense and very sweet. Candy floss like, belgian candied sugar, some maple, slightly sour / bitter finish. Overall very intense and does not lay well with the ’other’ children in the park. Shame on you 17! shame!

Dark brown in color with a large I mean huge off white head that sticks to glass and looks like marshmallow. Aroma is sweet, spice and yeast. Fruit, spice, yeast and a tartness are the flavor that are most noted.

Malty and spicy smell and taste. Very belgiany like flavors. Pretty balanced and smooth, maybe a little too spicy for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Corked & Caged 750 ml Bottle. Pours a cloudy dark reddish caramel color with ample tan head. Aroma is Belgian yeast, dark fruits and candi sugars with a bit of oak. The flavor starts with a moderate dose of brown sugar, allspice and yeast followed by notes of raisin, fig, pepper and pear. Also some subtle oak and alcohol characteristics in the background. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with strong carbonation and more dark fruits and caramelized sugars in the finish. As lively, complex and flavorful as their best stuff.

2011 vintage Bottle no. 101329 750ml served in a snifter. A - Dark brown body with a creamy 2 finger head that settles into a tightly knit cap. S - Earthy and slightly funky yeast and wood, coriander, apple brandy, vanilla, pears, old bubblegum. T - Robust caramel malt, toasted brown sugar, coriander, clove, oak wood is present but stays on the edges. Apples, vanilla, candied pears, and hints of toasted banana and cotton candy sweetness. Finishes spicy with fruit and woody overtones. M - Medium carbonation, creamy feel, full bodied. I started out drinking this at cellar temp but it’s way better room temperature. The yeast dominates and the oak is light but gives it a rustic edge. Very complex. Can’t wait to pop open my other bottle in about 5 years or so. Serving type: bottle 05-27-2012

What an amazing beer. Expertly crafted. There is no booziness despite the abv. Weak nose.

Bottle from total wine sterling. Pouts dark brown with a half inch of khaki foam. Has that Belgian yeast thing on the nose. Nice, rich, maltiness on the tongue. Dark fruits, brown sugar all of it. Finishes clean. Hides it’s alcohol well.

Tasted from big corked bottle into a glass beer stein. Thanks Drew for the great birthday present! It poured a gorgeous amber colour with HUGE beige foam, lots of Belgian lace. Strong Unibroue Belgian-style yeast notes: fruity, spicy, bubble-gum, black pepper, clove, dried apricots, honey, rising bread dough... Despite the age, still some nice bready, malty, noble hops notes. Hardwood aging, faint vanilla and beneficial oxidation. Light-medium body, spritzy carbonation. Crisp, dry finish, to the point of dry-mouth. Well-balanced, well-crafted, well-aged. Delicious.

Pours like a cola in color, fizzy tan head, steadily rising bubbles. Smells like a cola with notes of musty old bread and caramel. Flavor is deceptively sweet, hiding a good alcohol kick at 10%. The booze comes through, but subtly and pleasantly. Hops are there under notes of sweet dry fruits. Full body, lively carbonation. Quite nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
