Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.

As testimony to its remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

So in 2011, we proudly brought back this French Oak aged, bottle refermented dark ale, with the "Grande Réserve" appellation as a fitting endorsement of it’s exceptional quality for aging. Brewed only once a year, in limited quantities, and individually numbered "brasseur" bottles, this is truly a flavorful delight for the specialty beer enthusiast.

Lots of plums, dark fruit, aniseed and tons of carbonation. Good stuff but too carbonated

Bottle, 09/28/2015, 2012 bottle, thanks to Scott. Pours a deep mahogany color, thin off-white fizzy head. Aroma is fruity sweet caramel, plum, nutty earth notes, cloves, light banana. Taste is chewy caramel, nutty, banana bread, figs, Belgian yeast. Medium thick body, carbonation not too aggressive. Well done, tasty.

Bottle from2011. Pours a dark red, brown color. Aroma is yeasty, some sugary dark fruits. Taste is sweet, plums or cherry, not the yeasty Belgium character. Nice beer.

Well... slew the bottle before i had a chance to rate it. Overall a pretty average beer. Smooth but not a strong aroma and not a lot of flavor. Sugary lighter. Some dates and such. Certainly not a bad beer but nothing amazing.

Bottle pour split, thanks Andrew. This was the 2013 version, very nice amber pour, sweet aroma I get kind of black licorice in the aroma. Deep flavor, spices, little bitter. Very nice beer.

750 mL bottle, poured and split. Cork exploded off this one. 2013 vintage. Pours a swirling caramel brown color with a cola fizz head. Wood like, raisin spice aroma. Very nice flavor with some vanilla, plum fruit, and maybe some cinnamon spice. Has a bitter hop finish very late. High carb here. Very tasty strong ale. Probably my favorite beer from these guys.

Chocolate brown pour and brown lace not much head. Aroma is caramel malt, booze and toasted hops. Flavor is dank and dark with burnt toasted complexion and savory sweet malt with bits of citrus. Well done strong ale.
