Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.

As testimony to its remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

So in 2011, we proudly brought back this French Oak aged, bottle refermented dark ale, with the "Grande Réserve" appellation as a fitting endorsement of it’s exceptional quality for aging. Brewed only once a year, in limited quantities, and individually numbered "brasseur" bottles, this is truly a flavorful delight for the specialty beer enthusiast.

Absolutely delicious. One of the best beers I’ve ever had. Murky brown color w off white head. Not much on the smell. The flavors are a complex blend of dark fruit, clove, cola and tobacco. The aftertaste is a warm reminder of what just happened. That warmth is the only warning you have as to how important it is not to drive after drinking this gift from the beer gods.

Thanks for brunnsbe for the bottle (December 2010). Both the aroma and taste have got a lot of liquorice and almost no alcohol. Very nice. Color is deep amber and there is only a tiny white, vanishing head. A pretty typical belgie and a very good beer.

Cloudy/muddy dark brown poor with a very tanned head, sticky. Aromas are very yeasty (unibroue typical), very hoppy, dark fruits, prunes, raisins, dates and coriander. Huge creamy body, sweet and a zesty hoppy mouthfeel. Flavors of alcohol, orange zest, dark fruits, grapefruit and a spicy finish. Missing a little "je ne sais quoi" for an anniversary brew, will let this one sit for a while, still tastes very fresh.

2013 bottle, 12C. Disappointingly staid label, so I listened to "Crazy Horses" by the Osmonds to set more of a Unibroue vibe. Fairly dark brown with a large light beige head that fades to a lasting coat. Aroma of stewed and dried fruit - plums, prunes, muscatels - Port, some mocha, an earthy and doughy yeastiness that’s a bit surprisingly far in the background (although it creeps up a bit). Bittersweet chocolate registers as much as the fruit in the taste. Has that bottom-end rumble that can make intense fruit flavours more easily drinkable without seeming lush. Fullish bodied and fairly sweet, but it dries out a bit and there’s a spiciness to the bitterness and I guess the oak at the end. Suggestion of Armagnac-like booze there too, but nothing hot. A fine, characterful beer.

This beer surprised me as I was expecting something really Belgiany, like the classic banana and gum taste that I’m not a fan of. This was great though. Poured a orangey mahogany colour with an off white head. Aroma was of wine, bananas, plums, wood, grapes and some mustiness as well. Tastes of wine, sweet grapes, and plums. Had a medium body with average carbonation and not too boozy feeling at all. Had a tingle on the tongue and an oily feel with a wine bitterness and grape aftertaste. There are not many Belgian strongs I would buy twice, but I could go for another one of these.

Aged in french oak. Taste sort of like holiday beers or Christmas ales, which I’m not a fan of. Otherwise the ale is smooth and has a good alcohol level without being too strong. Got it for $13.5 for a 750ml bottle

Murky dark leather brown with a frothy tan head. Smells of basement, musk, grapes, ripe plums, dried cherries and wood. Really nice tasting, not boozy at all, very fruity but not overpoweringly sweet. A really standout example of the style for me as I usually find them to be yeast-beasts while this one has better balance than a Russian gymnast. Great peppy but slightly oily mouthfeel with a fruity, caramel, woody flavour that lasts.
