COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.

As testimony to its remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

So in 2011, we proudly brought back this French Oak aged, bottle refermented dark ale, with the "Grande Réserve" appellation as a fitting endorsement of it’s exceptional quality for aging. Brewed only once a year, in limited quantities, and individually numbered "brasseur" bottles, this is truly a flavorful delight for the specialty beer enthusiast.

75cl bottle courtesy of Belgbeergeek @ Belgian RB Gathering of Ultimate Evil.

Brown or deep amber in colour. Opaque with a rich beige head. Smell of yeast, caramel and a bit of copper. Sweetness balanced with alcohol, roasted malt, dry fruit and noticeable oak finish. Carbonation helps cleanse, finishing clean leaving only the oak and cocoa notes. Overall enjoyable Strong Ale.

The beer pours a dark chestnut brown with a foamy off-white head. The nose is yeast-forward with a hint of dried fig, alcohol, light oak and molasses (more so with warmth). It's full flavored with a slightly nutty malt base, bubble-gummy yeast, and lingering tannic bitterness. The beer has a rich winter-weather approved malt base, but is stretched thin by a big yeast fruit presence, bitter oak astringency, and double digit abv. The beer's generous carbonation helps oxy-clean some of those heavy flavors off the palate, but it still sits heavier than expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Deep Brown color with Ruby Highlights. Strong degree of opacity. Off-white/tan finger’s-worth of lacy head that does not dissipate and clings well to the sides of the glass. No visible carbonation. Rich and bready, subtle roasted malt notes balance well with cocoa tones. Rich sweetness all over the tongue but not cloyingly so. Just enough hop bitterness to add dimension to the malt character. Mouthfeel: Medium-heavy bodied. Coats the tongue like a cool blanket. No tactile presence of carbonation and slight alcohol warming on the back of the palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle share at Evernote. Aroma is malts, burnt sugar, fermented cherries, bourbon. Taste is a complex mix of malts, bread pudding, dark fruits, oak, bourbon. Big flavors and rich but extremely smooth with just enough warming burn coming through.

Opaque brown/ruby with a huge light brown head. Roasted malt, light caramel, ripe dark fruit, oak. Mainly sweet, a little hop bitterness, not much, long lasting oak aftertaste. Full body, slick with an lively carbonation.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer & Beyond, Tel Aviv. A bit hazy brownish with small beige head. Chocolate notes in the aroma, woody, some toffee. Sweet flavor, chocolate notes, woody, caramel notes, light roasted malt, tart, notes of cherry, milky, light sour semi-dry finish. Light carbonation, creamy texture, medium-bodied. Nice.

2007 vintage. Murky brown, thin white head. Very sweet, fruity plum and raisin aroma. Taste is also fruity, some more prune and raisin, plus some oaky notes. Not bad actually

Thanks for brunnsbe for the bottle (December 2010). Both the aroma and taste have got a lot of liquorice and almost no alcohol. Very nice. Color is deep amber and there is only a tiny white, vanishing head. A pretty typical belgie and a very good beer.

2013 bottle, 12C. Disappointingly staid label, so I listened to "Crazy Horses" by the Osmonds to set more of a Unibroue vibe. Fairly dark brown with a large light beige head that fades to a lasting coat. Aroma of stewed and dried fruit - plums, prunes, muscatels - Port, some mocha, an earthy and doughy yeastiness that’s a bit surprisingly far in the background (although it creeps up a bit). Bittersweet chocolate registers as much as the fruit in the taste. Has that bottom-end rumble that can make intense fruit flavours more easily drinkable without seeming lush. Fullish bodied and fairly sweet, but it dries out a bit and there’s a spiciness to the bitterness and I guess the oak at the end. Suggestion of Armagnac-like booze there too, but nothing hot. A fine, characterful beer.
