COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.

As testimony to it’s remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

So in 2011, we proudly brought back this French Oak aged, bottle refermented dark ale, with the "Grande Réserve" appellation as a fitting endorsement of it’s exceptional quality for aging. Brewed only once a year, in limited quantities, and individually numbered "brasseur" bottles, this is truly a flavorful delight for the specialty beer enthusiast.

Deep dark brown beer with a creamy tan head and mahogany/garnet highlights. Aroma is quite nice. Rich plums and toasted wheat malt. A kiss of prunes and sweet dried cherries and pears. There is a pungent sort of phenolic smokiness. Lots of clove and allspice and also some bandaid as well. This is definitely one of the richest and fruitiest of the Unibroues and the yeast tastes quite different here than it did in any of the other anniversary beers. there is a definite wheaty/weizenbocky quality to this brew, especially as it starts to warm up. Smoky and wheaty with lots of molasses and fruity/rummy spiciness. Very vineous and rich tasting. As it warms you start to get a bit of cocoa and raisins. I’d like to try it again with a year or so on it, but it’s still pretty solid. Further warming really brings it together though, a light minty/herbal quality picks up and integrates very nicely with all of the other spicy/malty elements.

Pours hazy brown with creamy off-white head that gives way after a few minutes. Aroma is Belgian yeast, champagne, apple and alcohol. Smooth creamy mouthfeel. Excellent flavor with notes of Belgian yeast, spice and wood. Not a trace of its 10% ABV. Another winner from Unibroue.

750ml bottle, shared by a Ratebeerian whose name I don’t remember at DLD 2013 (thank you, though). Hazy red / brown color. Minimal off-white head. Little loose lace. Some dark fruit, berry, belgian candy sugar, chocolate. Soft smooth carbonation, dry texture. Spicy hop. Solid belgian strong.

(No 2012-53360) (578-190313)

UPDATED: APR 27, 2013 Nice drink. Lots of good unibroues out there, and this is a notch above the pack. Beautifully balanced soft yeast taste with some perfume aromas. Pours with good head and some lacing. Very soft feel on the palate with dangerously hidden alcohol. Finishes in well-balanced sweetness and a touch of bitterness. Can feel the French Oak here.

Very sweet grapey raisin aroma, a bit of the characteristic unibroue yeast, caramel and vinous notes. Hazy brown color with big but thin head, sticks around for a while. Taste is very complex, starts of with a simple sweet malty flavor, turns to a raisiny, oaky, mellow caramel middle and a clean finish. Quite highly carbonated and medium bodied. Alcohol taste isn’t pronounced here, but definitely feel some heat. Great beer.
