durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Oct 22, 2008 Bottle. Hazy light yellow pour with bubbly white head typical of Unibroue beers. Strong nose of orange/lemon, coriander and clove as well as some bubble gum and banana. Wheaty/yeasty. Subtle it ain’t, but I found myself settling into it nicely. Haven’t had too many Belgian whites that truly vary from the style (maybe Bruery Orchard?). This is another typical one, if a bit strongly spiced relatively to others. Snojerk321 (1914), San Diego, California, USA Oct 15, 2008 Bottle. Pours a cloudy straw with a large, frothy white head. The aroma is the typical orange and coriander notes found in most wits, but it also has a sweetness to the nose that hints at bubble gum and a faint cotton candy. The mouth feel is light and thin with lively carbonation. Oranges, bananas and wheat... the flavor is sweet, clean and fruity with a light wheat finish. Naka (524), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 8, 2008 Pours a mildly hazy straw golden color with a thick white fizzy head that dies down after a few seconds, but doesn’t disappear completely. Aroma of apples, citrus, and a bitey yeast, all with a hint of bitter. The flavor is a pretty decent wit, but the aroma has me believing the flavor would be much stronger. Wheat with some definite coriander and lemony citrus notes and clove. Pretty dry in the finish. Not quite as much of the Belgian yeast character as I was looking for. Decent, but not as good as some of their other offerings. smjohnst (202), , Pennsylvania, USA Oct 8, 2008 I wasn’t too crazy about this one. It had too much of a bitter lemony flavor to it for me. Just average elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Oct 7, 2008 Pours a light golden color with an energetic white head. Aroma of yeasts, hops, wheat and a touch of citrus. Overall, this is not a bad Belgian white, but something is “empty” about the balance of spices and wheat present in this brew. lumpsowers (235), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Sep 29, 2008 Cloudy straw color, no head, light lacing. Citrus and grass aroma. Sweet, thick mouth, fizzy on the tongue, bitter floral hops quickly balanced by thick malt after. Tasty brew, almost like a tripel. I liked this one quite a bit. dmtroyer (409), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 23, 2008 750ml. A pale golden yellow beer with an extra active white head. Nose is fairly muted, if I stick my nose in the bottle I get strong bread yeasts with a spritz of lemon and lime. Body is much more exciting, semi-sweet lemon and lime show up again, this time complimented by some nice citrus fruit and subtle spice. The palate is coated by extremely carbonated, light and almost thin body... just a bit on the thin side otherwise it would have gotten a 5 on the palate. A very solid, lighter witbier than I can see myself coming back to at the height of next summer. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 21, 2008 [1657-20080903] Tap. Wheat and fruity yeast aroma has some grains. Hazy, light orange brown body with a long-lasting foamy white head. Fruity wheat flavour has some banana ’esters’ and some grainy yeast. Medium body. It’s nearly inconceivable that a beer made only 500km away from my home has made the journey of 4300km - nearly nine times that distance - to get to Skagway ON TAP, but is only really available back home in the liquor store in bottles. I figure if it took me a week and 4700km of flying and cruising to find all this out, then this is definitely the sample I’m going to rate... and even here it’s still enjoyable.
