Oakes (6979), Miami Beach, Florida, USA May 6, 2006 Opaque dark brown colour. Aroma is lead by yeasty spicineness and not much else. Flavour is mainly plastic with some backing burnt sugar. Very simplistic and mailed-in. Did Van Steenberge brew this? muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA May 23, 2007 750 ml bottle a bit below cellar temperature, Unibroue glass (of course), March 2007. Fizzy dark tan head is quickly depleted atop the murky dark reddish-brown liquid…..faint raspberry-cherry notes and soft cocoa in the nose…..utterly bland, highly and seemingly artificially carbonated, a bit like a shot of YooHoo mixed in with Sprite and a bit of fruit juice, not really any beerlike qualities at all, dry and thin and a bit brackish/chalky to finish, near-repellant and perhaps a new low for this once-great brewer. MartinT (4377), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Mar 25, 2006 Any first impressions?
-A swiftly depleting head dissolves onto opaque darkness.
-Faint burnt molasses barely escape the black hole of a nose.
-A rather ample sweet malt body offers molasses and berries, but some surging oxidation quickly toppled them.
-The prickly carbonation expands distastefully over the malty sweetness.
What if you dig deeper?
-Some roastiness exists nearby the subdued tartness.
-Metallic shavings seem to have replaced the yeast.
-Green veggies slowly take over the burnt/roastiness in the nose.
-Considering the bulk of the previous ratings, I was expecting to be utterly disgusted, but I am simply...well, okay, repelled.
Bottled for the Quebec Carnaval. tiggmtl (4179), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 18, 2006 Overly charred aroma is quite metallic with some soured fruit notes to it but none of the typical Unibroue yeast character. Dull dark brown body is topped by a low white head that recedes rapidly to ring. Sharp sourness, stale fruit and strong metallic flavours leave this undrinkable. It seems like it must be oxidized, yet the cork was tight and the carbonation was fine. Medium light body. Drainpour. It’s a shame that for such a limited edition it was so severely flawed. I guess we’ll never know what it was supposed to taste like. Tulip glass. Allowed to warm from the fridge. Bottle (Grand Duc, Mar-05). CapFlu (3340), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Jul 6, 2006 (750ml bottle) I have seemingly found a "good" bottle? (Thanks Luc!) Pours a medium, foamy light brown head with a Trois Pistoles colour. Nose is very yeasty, coffee and even beef jerky with a lemon-citrus twist. Flavour is thin and watery. Mild plum, malt and a coffee tonic elixir. What happened here?
