Of all the Ephemere varieties, this one is still my favourite. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Feb 11, 2007 750ml corked bottle-pours a foamy off white head and hazy gold color with effervescence. Aroma is musty wheat, medium fruit. Taste is wheat, black current, secondary yeast. Good effervescence. Occasional. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Feb 10, 2007 Pours a hazy deep peach amber, topped by a good inch and a half of soft pinkish foamy suds. Scant lacing. Thin streams of bubbles rise throughout the bottle. Prominent sweet and perfumy currant aroma. My wife grows red currants, this smells like what she grows.
Dry fruity flavor, like the sugars have been fermented out of the currants - more like a strong herbal tea than a juice flavor. Quite nice. Behind this is a nice mild and tangy wheat beer flavor. Lighter body, spritely champagne-like carbonation. FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 29, 2007 Sampled from a 750ml brown bottle this beer poured an odd light salmon-yellow color with a huge light pink head. The aroma is a very pleasant dry spicy and fruity mix. The flavor is tart, tangy and fruity - though grape is not really specifically detected. There are hints of pepper and other vague spices. The beer is surprisingly dry. Tasty. Grandpa (325), Verona, New York, USA Jan 29, 2007 The appropriate glass filled with a cloudy, pinkish-yellow liquid topped with a large effervescent head (that overflowed the glass, then disappeared). The first taste was slightly sweet and astringent, like a sparkling wine. It was light bodied, even for a wheat ale. My thoughts were on what I would serve with this. It didn’t go with the beer snacks on my bar. It finished with a mildly bitter aftertaste. ratman197 (3139), Arvada, Colorado, USA Jan 21, 2007 750 ml bottle poured a hazy golden amber with a light purple tint and large lasting off white head. Aromas of currants, wheat and light straw. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of bread, light currant, yeast and a hint of citrus with a dry semi sweet finish. zootfinster (179), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 14, 2006 I bought this beer by mistake. It was next to another I wanted and as I often do, grabbed before I looked. (That can really get you into trouble) First I’m not a great fan of wheat beer and even less so of flavored wine.
When I brought it home a took a closer look imagine my dismay when I saw it was a currant flavored wheat beer. But after paying $8.00 I was determined to drink it.
At first taste the fruit flavor was overpowering but I persevered. After sitting for a bit it became a bit more mellow and by the time I finished the bottle it was almost enjoyable. It was certainly a bright and lively beer. It is not a beer I would buy again but it was interesting.
