Bottle [341ml] shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & garthicus -- c/o HogTownHarry. Yeah, this sucker is old but I ain’t passing up rating it. Pours a clear pale gold with a spare diminishing white head. Poured more in the glass and now it’s a cloudy copper. Aroma of maple syrup, sugary malt, fruit and yeast. Slightly watery, light flavour of fruit, yeast and maple syrup -- somewhat oily mouthfeel. Average bodied. Another very old Unibroue beer that has held up quite well.

341ml bottle - shared with blankboy, garthicus and gregclow, via trade with JulienHuxley. Clear light gold with a smallish creamy-fizzy white head, some bubbles. Like the Sans Nom (both senior citizen bottles sample at the same time), it smells dry, fruity and a bit papery - not much alcohol presence in it, perhaps a tad herbal. There’s not much taste left at all - vague fruit sweetness, but mostly just dry, almost chalky oxidized grain - not nasty, but not all that pleasant either - mostly nothing. Light body, weak carbonation, slightly syrupy, and the papery dryness shifts to a mustiness in the finish - yeah, obviously way past its prime (but again, not vomit-inducing, not really even a drainpour). Thanks, Julien!!

Thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: cloudy yellow, a tiny white head. Aroma: perfume, caramel, honey and maple syrup. There’s a little spice and fruit hiding in there too. Flavour: light body with a little diluted honey, maple syrup, musky with a little sawdust.

Tart green apples and mild horsblanket nose . Mild balsamic and sourdough breead flavors. Orange and lemon zest soice with mild cloves and allspice. Nice yeasty mouthfeel. Tart acidic finish with some odd spice notes.

Wow. This was one beer that I have been wanting to try for quite sometime. Huge thanks to Todd for opening this one at Celebration November 2004. Light gold in colour. Aroma of cider, slightly sour, some light malt and some yeast. Flavour was pretty light with some cider vinegar, slightly sweet malt (cookie dough), still some citrus hops (lemon, orange). Still had medium carbonation after all these years, full mouthfeel. Finishes quick. Quit nice still, thanks again Todd.

Wow, I can’t believe I’m getting to rate this one. Cheers to Todd for starting the night off with this rarity - shared with muzzlehatch, tiggmtl, Rastacouere, radiomgb, DumDum and our host CapFlu. Bottle was found hiding on a shelf and was 1999 ’vintage.’ Somewhat cloudy pale straw yellow with a thin head that left us quickly and for good. Slightly sour cider aromas hit you immediately and then there is some cookie-dough and dry yeastiness too. An oily mouth-coating honey/fruit flavour - some citrus and some pear - leads to a quick finish. Stood up fairly well considering, but a treat no matter the outcome.

1999 bottle, shared with CapFlu, tiggmtl, Rastacouere, Beerhugger, Radiomgb, and DumDum in Ottawa. Hazy honey-dry apple cider color...bit cidery, and sour on the nose, lightly malty and yeasty flavor, with honey and a bit of pear, quite sweet. Full, slightly liquorish/oily mouthfeel. Amazingly good for its age...thanks again Todd!

Thanks Todd for sharing... Cidery, yeasty, dry, powdery, cookie-dough aroma that is slightly sour. Hazy, golden straw coloured body with thin, white, fully diminishing head. Yeasty cookie-dough, orange-lemon-citrus flavour. Mouthfeel is a touch oily. Medium bodied and very low carbonation. Though obviously past its prime, this was still a treat to have sampled. Bottle enjoyed with beerhugger, CapFlu, DumDum, muzzlehatch, radiomgb and Rastacouere.

12oz: Clear yellowish cider appearance, no head despite a surprising pop upon opening. Weird aroma, this old Unibroue yeast seemed to impart very cookie-ish overtones. It smells quite tart, dry, powdery with curacao suggestions. Past its prime ginger cookies flavour with notes of pears, coconut, repellently short finish, staling. Tart cookie dough finish. Medium bodied, very low carbonation. Yeah this was past its prime, but don’t pass the chance if you manage to find one, the difference between the older and newyer unibroue strain is worth an essay (which I don’t volunteer to write). Thanks Todd!

UPDATED: NOV 8, 2004 (Bottle) Sampled at Celebration November 2004. Pours a small white head with a golden body. The nose is somewhat musky, horseblanket with a milf flat apple sauce to it. The flavour lacks the renowned Unibroue yeastiness but it had pleasant hoppy notes. Amazing that there is this much left in the way of aroma and flavour after 5 years. Past its prime but still holding in there... Overall very nice.
