fluffy (229), Florida, USA Apr 26, 2009 dark brown with a thin but lasting head. smells of dark berries and malt. taste is of rich dark fruit, dark sugars, and some spice. finish is clean and warming due to the alcohol content. very interesting and another great beer from Unibroue! angrypirate06 (678), Texas, USA Apr 24, 2009 Dark body with a nice light brown head. Aroma of raisins, yeast, sweetbread, plums. Very nice nose! Flavor of yeast, cinnamon, bread. Very enjoyable brew. Hides alcohol well. Syrupy mouthfeel. I’d go out right now to buy another, but I’m too drunk. Dezzilu (211), Whitmore Lake, Michigan, USA Apr 21, 2009 A dark pour with a roasted hops aroma. The taste was wickedly smooth and really a continuation of the roasted hop smell. The finish was full-bodied and only improved as the beer warmed in the glass. This is a wonderfully complex beer by one of the Canadian breweries that really knows what they are doing. Awesome. Cheers. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Apr 19, 2009 Sample at the Unibroue tasting at Blacklick Wine and Spirits on 4.10.09. Dark brown color with a big tan head. Yeasty and malty aroma with plenty of sugary sweetness. Grain and sweet malt flavor. Not a whole lot of yeast, so tastes more like a barley wine. bedainedebiere (274), Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada Apr 19, 2009 In 2009, it is impossible (I think) to find that beer in Québec, even though it is brewed here, in Chambly! Since I usually like Unibroue’s products, I asked my brother that lives in the US to by me two bottles. 8,99$ for 750 ml. Best before 11-11-2013. Pretty low carbonation (I even thought it was flat at first), darker than most stouts, not much foam but constant thick lacing. Sweet and spicy aroma (smells like a headache...). Very sweet taste, with strong notes of licorice sourness and various spices, moderate bitterness, some astringency, also fruiy, all in all very complex and easily drinkable although it is a very heavy, very sweet beer. Worth trying if you can get ahold of it. I will let my other bottle age... And ask my brother some more... And share the next one I’ll have... Héhéhé! FastEddie (178), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Apr 18, 2009 Notes of prunes, raisins, cherries, coffee. Slightly alcoholic taste. Pretty good if you’re in the mood for this kind of ale. Moggman (187), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 15, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark brown. Aroma contains notes of coffee, dark fruits, belgian yeast. Flavor is dark fruits, sweet yeast, and a little alcohol bite. daleharshman (181), San Diego, California, USA Apr 13, 2009 750mL bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar (Escondido, CA). Pours a very dark and almost opaque brown, bordering on black. Probably the darkest Belgian-style beer I have seen. Two fingers of light brown head which doesn’t stick around for long. Aroma of malts, dark fruit, and chocolate. More of the same in the flavor with the dark fruit and chocolate toward the finish. The noticeable chocolate is interesting in a Belgian. Less yeast than most Unibroue brews. A little booze but generally the 10.5% is well hidden. Rating #22.
