LtDan (470), LA - Originally from South NJ!, California, USA Sep 21, 2009 Appearance: Pours a dark reddish brown, letting no light get through. It pours with a big foamy head that subsides to a collection of froth at the top.
Aroma: Raisins, spice (clove and nutmeg?), and sweet red grapes.
Taste: Dark fruits, licorice, cocoa, red grapes, and spicy hops.
Mouthfeel: Really fizzy and medium bodied.
Overall: Another winner from Unibroue. patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 20, 2009 Bottle. Pours extremely dark brown, nearly black, with a tremendous, creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, walnuts, and hints of pepper. Very full body, with a pronounced, slow-burning finish. Excellent Belgian strong from Unibroue. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Légère présence de mélasse en arrière goût. (Rating #2659) Cybercat (776), Georgia, USA Sep 13, 2009 Pours an opaque sable, nearly black, with a thick and fine-bubbled beige head. Aroma is malty with a nutty undertone and quite tempting. Flavor is malty, a little nutty and slightly sweet with a hint of caramel. Smooth, tingly texture leaves a nutty and malty finish. JulienHuxley (165), Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada Sep 12, 2009 Updated: Sep 21, 2009Bottle, 5 years old. Dark, dark pour almost black brown. Aroma is pretty complexe lots of mushrooms, woodsy and kind of fishy (fish not strange, a seashore smell) and of course the classic dates, plums, grapes and cherries. It smells fresh for it’s age. Mouthfeel is sparkling and bold. Taste is red fruits, alcohol still quite present (the bottle was VERY well sealed) and cola. Well done long finale. Chipper (179), Red Lion, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 12, 2009 Dark reddish brown pour with a big tan head. Dried fruit and malt aroma with a little alcohol.
Taste is huge with the dried fruit, a little spicy, and the alcohol is only slightly present as it warms.
Not my favorite style, but still great brew. MBison (548), Southern Highlands, Australia Sep 10, 2009 Bottle 750ml. Aged 9 months piror to tasting. Poured dark brown with a large, tight, foamy, lightly tanned head which was fully lasting. A complex aroma with notes of sweet milk chocolate, coco powder, yeasty malts, plums, blueberries, dried apricots, allspice, light notes of coffee and a dash of brandy. Flavor was smooth with virtually no bitterness, yeasty malts, chocolate, prunes, blackberries, sultana’s and a touch of vanilla & cinnamon. Very well masked alcohol content. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, a somewhat syrupy texture and a good length finish. HighlanderOne (538), Somewherein, New Jersey, USA Sep 6, 2009 Poured from big bottle. Aroma is cocoa, dried fruit, oak. Quite dark - I’ve seen lighter stouts - this tan head persists. Cocoa, fig, some kind of tart fruit, brown sugar, in flavor. Alcohol hits big in back of throat, sinuses, even in stomach. Got a bit mellower toward the finish, but still felt a bit more like a brandy than a beer.
