emerica56 (575), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Dec 1, 2007 This beer pours a dark brown with a a thick head that fades quick and thins out. It also leaves some minor spotted laceing along the sides of the glass. The aroma is very vinus with some bready malt and a mild acidity. As you drink it there is an initial bitterness with somr hints of pitted fruits and bready malt. The palate is full of grape and it is very smooth and leaves a nice coating on the sidewalls of your mouth. There is also a mild fall spice at the back of your mouth. Alldaydrinker (557), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA Dec 1, 2007 Pours a deep brown colour with a medium creamy tan head. Nose of grapes, dark fruits, old pennies and spices. Initial taste begins creamy with dark fruits, light roasted malts and grape. Moving into a light hops. FInishing with cocoa and sweet malts. Dry finish. Medium Body. Drink4Satan (585), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Dec 1, 2007 McChouffe trappist glass. Pours an inpenetrable deep brown with a puffy tan head with good retention. Complex aroma of berries, buttery grape-like notes, pound cake, bubble-gum yeast, and fig. Sweet, dark malts, brown sugar, grapes, corriander, figs, bubble-gum yeast, cherry and cinnimon spice on the finish. This is insanely complex and the flavours are well supported by a full, creamy body that finishes aromatic. It is slightly chalky, but for some reason it’s not offensive for being so. Nice, soft micro-bubble carbonation. Unibroue does it again. enak (27), Australia Nov 29, 2007 75cl bottle in a Duvel Glass.
Pours a rich full head which subsides without much lacing. A swirl of the glass responds with a renewed head. Aroma of berries, green grapes and current. The colour is that of a dark molasses which can’t be seen through. Upon tasting I am met with a strong burnt malt flavour emanating with hints of caramel and toffee. Overall I am a bit dissapointed with this bier considering it’s reputation but a substantial bier nonetheless. Satisfying but needs a bit more. scrizzz (1246), kirkland, Washington, USA Nov 28, 2007 Updated: Mar 26, 2009Thanks Laura! 2004 bottle, says best by 2007. Cola nut, prune, bright and sweet soft brown. Oxidized and old, great leathery, velvety smooth character. Love this. Best by 2007? Whatever. ChazMania (408), Pasadena, California, USA Nov 26, 2007 Pours thick and consistent. There is a big head and dark fig like aroma here. First taste is that of prunes slathered in malt. The texture is chewy and fully coats my tongue. Long finish that is complex with fig, dark cherry, yeast and bread. At this hi alcohol content, it’s going to take me awhile to finish this puppy. grandet (477), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 21, 2007 Copying from my tasting notes. Bottle. Dark pour with a small head. Nice aroma of red wine and some hops and malt sweetness. Nice smooth beer for the alcohol content. Quite warming toward the end. Very good timfoolery (482), California, USA Nov 19, 2007 Poured with medium head and smelled of hops and wine. Rich and smooth on the palate considering the high alcohol content. No slouch on taste either. Excellent beer!
