jvmiller (532), Bel Air, Maryland, USA Aug 18, 2009 This was hard to place, for me, stylistically. It certainly had belgian notes to it, a dark fruityness, a candy sweetness, carbonated mouthfeel. But it was also dark and malty. 10.5 is miles away. I thought this was quite good and special. BeerBaron617 (306), Novi, Michigan, USA Aug 18, 2009 Shared this with MereLikesBeer, I originally purchased this as a potential for my 300th rating, but went with the Uninbroue 17. HOWEVER, this stuff is equally as epic. It’s a dark Belgian style beer, with tons of prune and raisin, and a hint of clove on the finish. It truly is an epic beer, equal to the task of pairing with a good steak, as well as creme brulee.. Cheers! MereLikesBeer (153), Royal Oak, Michigan, USA Aug 18, 2009 Oh Unibroue. So, I shared a bottle of this with BeerBaron617 - who else... And well, it was epic, as usual...Good choice BeerBaron617 (as it was his purchase). Definitely not what I expected upon pouring it. It poured an opaque black brown color with a fluffy light tan head. Has a strong aroma of dried dark fruits and alcohol, sweet, and slightly malty. Taste, epic. It has a great amount of carbonation, typical of Unibroue. It has a great alcohol warming, and all of the aroma notes translate to the palate. Very tasty, I would love to get another bottle of this and crack it for a special occasion. drowland (1337), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2009 Got this to drink in a hotel in Chicago and lost my tasting notes, so I just jotted down the number the next day. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 17, 2009 [2345-20090103] 650mL bottle. Sweet dark fruity malt aroma is roasty. Dark dark brown body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head. Sweet roasted malt flavour has lots of sugary fruit and a long aftertaste. Full body. Wonderfully malty and lingering sugary finish, Formidable!
(c/o DuctTape, w/ him, jerc) dnstone (134), , New Jersey, USA Aug 12, 2009 Pours deep brown/black and has the aroma of dark candi sugar. Dark malt and belgian yeast give this one its uniqueness. BeerChaser0078 (283), Melbourne, Australia Aug 10, 2009 750ml bottle. Yes indeed. This is another amazing beer from Unibroue. Pours almost black, but if held up to the light it is really a dark ruby colour, with a light tan head that lasts. Sour cherry and port wine feature strongly on the nose. They also both feature in the mouth along with molasses, blackberries and sherry. This is a fantastic beer that I can only imagine would develop even more complex and delicious flavours over time. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Aug 7, 2009 750ml bottle - $8.48 at Sherlock’s in Marietta, Georgia. Best Before: 2-26-2012.
Appearance: Pours an opaque, walnut brown body with an appropriately tall, foamy, light tan head.
Smell: Sweet-scented, malty nose coming across as a plated up Shoofly Pie for dessert along with some secondary notes of dark fruits and spice.
Taste: Dark, not-quite-roasty maltiness with flavors of molasses, dark brown sugar, dark candi sugar, and sweetened cocoa-flavored coffee. Burst of black cherry, sour cherry, and cooked raisin fruitiness. Earthy spiciness with a hint of black pepper and ground cardamom. Small touch of alcohol warmth, though, as it warms somewhat, it becomes a moderate pinch of alcohol warmth. Finishes dry but also malty with a taste of, well, again, I’d say Shoofly Pie, but I feel that reference would be entirely lost on most.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Well carbonated with a tingly, altogether bubbly mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Paired remarkably well with the movie "Casino". I’d pair the last third with some food to see how it goes, but I only have yogurt and ramen, so... Easily one of the better Unibroue brews I’ve had, but, sadly, not one I often see around in Georgia. Ah well, such is life. Drinks surprisingly easy for purportedly being above 10%.
