cyanescens (156), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 2, 2007 This beer had massif flavor. Alcohol content made me happy. A deep brown beer with thick head. Taste is sweet, fruity but also partially a mellow nutty chocolate notes are present. Drank it with some really good breads. Definately a solid beer. oakbluff (298), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Feb 25, 2007 2004 vintage that I have been cellaring since purchased in Montreal Sep 05. I had heard that there had been problems with the 2004 corks so I was somewhat concerned opening this baby. I pulled the cork and pop! Poured with great fizz and gusto! Relief
The color is a very dark- held up to the light the ruby comes through. Lots and lots of floaties with great lacing. Smell is of sweet fruit and candy. Taste- damn that is smooth! Much smoother than Trois Pistoles. Dried fruits and bakers chocolate with a dry finish. No noticable hops. The house yeast isn’t too noticable here. This is an awesome beer and would be exceptional with a fine meal (mine was experienced with chicken soup). This is the best Unibroue that I have experienced to date. Mutualaid (136), Texas, USA Feb 23, 2007 Pours deep, deep ruby, almost like coffee, with an off-white head. Aromas of malt and provolone (yes provolone). Besides the obvious, there are notes of sour cherry in the flavor. Finish could be more clean. beerpirate (14), Chesapeake, Virginia, USA Feb 23, 2007 Pours a dark brown with a large creamy light brown head. Good lacing. Very good beer. adrian910ss (1394), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 21, 2007 750 ml bottle. Pours a murky dark brown sandy color with a large frosty beige head. Aroma is of fine dry chocolate malt, molasses, dates, prunes, plums, brown sugar and fresh yeast. Taste of brown spicy sugars, molasses, fresh yeast, dates and a nice dry chocolate backbone. Similar to other Unibroe offerings but still quite tasty. jimstrassburg (57), Germantown, Wisconsin, USA Feb 18, 2007 I had this at the beer tasting at Barley Pop in Germantown, WI. It was smoky in there so I may update when I get some. This was one of the best beers I’ve ever had despite being served colder that it should have. A ton of rich flavors. Chocolate and molasses stood out but I’ll have to get some and check more closely. It was also great mixed with their Quelque Chose (thx Chuck:). It was by far the standout at the tasting yesterday. It was a 2004 vintage too... Rotorhead87 (117), Temple, Texas, USA Feb 17, 2007 Bottle: Pours black with a small, light brown head that is mostly diminishing.
All I can say is Wow! This is one of the best best beers I have had, right up there with the Chimay Grand Reserve I had in Belgium. I has a rich, full flavor with a malty, molasses flavor with a hint of chocolate and some slight fruity overtones that are too complex for my amateur palate to detect. A wonderful long finish that lingers in your mouth after you finish a sip. Highly recommended to anyone who likes dark Belgian beers. LooseCannon (914), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Feb 17, 2007 750 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with full foam brown head. Little alcohol in the taste, taste of sweat malt with bitter after taste. Sweat aroma. Very good drinking beer.
