Phatz (225), Paradise, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 1, 2006 This beer is a real treat every chance I get to taste it. I’ve had it several times now but still never a whole bottle to myself. Still I decided to review it because it always leaves an impression on me.
Appearance: Served a dark burgundy - black with hints of plumb purple color.
Smell: Dark fruits and port with lots of sweetness in the nose.
Taste: Red wine like a Cabernet and Port with loads of spices and fruits, plumb on the top. More sugar sweetness and caramel. Plenty of toastyness. There are also hints of woodiness and fusel alcohol coming through to warm the belly. A nice dry finish.
Mouthfeel: Solid mouthfeel, creamy and spicy.
Drinkability: This is a perfect nightcap beer. Certainly a sipping beer but boy is it nice!
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!
rlgk (3377), Vårgårda, Sweden Jul 29, 2006 75 cl bottle. Very dark bown color, nice brown head. Woody, malty aroma, oak, fruits, figs, some yeast and vanilla. Smooth malty flavor, turning hoppy and a bit more aggressive after a while. Fruity notes, pepper and other spices. Sour but also malty in a quite strange mix. But its good, I liked it... jonnabrix (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 23, 2006 This poured very dark, with the appearance of a cola. Spicy and sweet, quite an array of flavors here. Not what I typically think of as a belgian strong ale, fantastic nonetheless. cbrixius (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 23, 2006 750 ml bottle....sampled with my family after dessert. Went well with some brownies. Poured purplish/dark brown with a pepsi-like head. Very sweet on the nose. Somewhat of a light to medium palate. Although I am not well-versed in these types of Belgians, I felt it was very well done. TrevorFloyd (309), Connecticut, USA Jul 22, 2006 A rich palate, loaded with so many flavors that I had trouble even beginning to name them. Chocolate, red wine? That just seemed like the tip of the ice berg. Alcohol was well hidden. Overall, a fantastic drink. ROGUE (621), Newark, Delaware, USA Jul 21, 2006 750 ml (2004)- Poured very dark brown with a frothy tan head that fell quickly. Sweet and spicy (like a ginger snap cookie) with a slight hint of fruit. The flavor throughout is good but the finish is "terrible", too pungent of an alcohol tastes that lingers a bit to long.
