Rich nose of molasses, yeast, and wood. Rich prune flavors, some jerky, and pumpernickel bread. Yeah, it’s a little unusual, but nicely balanced. Not my favorite, but solid and really interesting. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 15, 2009 Holy smokes, this is good! Poured deep dark brown, almost black, with ruby and orange highlights when raised to the light. Thick, pebbly, tan head with wonderful lacing and a patchy film that stayed strong throughout. Wonderful Belgian aromas of figs, raisins, plums. Hints of dark malts, bread, and brown sugar suggest something special once I get around to drinking this. And the flavor profile does not disappoint. The dark fruits lay the foundation up front, then a generous helping of hops and a clear earthy yeastiness follow right behind. The finish features a rich, bread-like maltiness that was promised on the nose. Full bodied, lively carbonation, and a clean aftertaste. This is why I prefer beer to wine. The carbonation is high--big turn off. The flavor is alcohol and tons of yeast and raisins. Not my bag. Beerlando (2307), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 10, 2009 2004 bottle, aged 5 years, courtesy TheCheeseMan. Pours and extremely dark mahogany color with a violet tint. A small, foamy, khaki colored head settles to a thin blanket, leaving minimal spotting behind. The nose is heavy on raisin, dark fig and caramel lending further sweet malt. Earthen spices include nutmeg and clove, with hints of molasses and candied orange peel lnding nice complexity. Flavors follow suit, big dark raisin and hints of cocoa are accompanied by brown sugar, burnt caramel, and various winter spices. That signature, bready, ethereal Unibroue yeast is there throughout. The palate is big and full, sweet but never cloying, with a nice, semi-dry finish. Very good brew. You can tell it has benefited from some bottle aging. GodOfThunder (860), Orlando, Florida, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 1, 2009 750ml corked bottle.
Near black opaque body, dense thick beige head that hangs around.
Plenty of bready, doughy yeast on the nose. Lots of spice; pepper, clove, vanilla, slight citrus hopiness, subtle dark fruits.
Suprisingly lean bodied for the strength, spritzy carbonation, bit of creaminess about the texture. Ends with an odd sharpness.
Yeast seems to dominate the palate. Lots of spicy phenolics; pepper, unripe plums, prunes, the odd bit of oxidised dried fruit. Finishes mildly bitter, slight roasted astrigency.
Bit disappointing. Quite similiar to other Unibroue beer, Trios Pistoles particularly, but not as well balanced or complex. unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA

The nose was nice and complex with black cherry, ripe peach and a malty spiciness. The taste started with black licorice, plums, raisins and toffee surrounding a huge malty caramel flavor. The finish was slightly bitter in the back of the throut. A nice warming ale with a very complex flavor profile. Very nice
