Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Pours a very hazy, nearly opaque walnut with an off-white head that leaves a nice soft blanket atop. The head retains very well and has a very small bubble composition. The aroma has the ever familiar banana and clove aroma of hefe/wit yeast, but with the dark fruit and leathery aroma of a Trappist yeast. There is also some bready and caramel like malt along with very faint hops and peppery spices. Mostly sweet at first, the flavors are what you would expect from the aroma. Toffee and dark fruit with some yeast at first, fading into a soft nothingness. The mouthfeel is perfect. Light and rich at the same time, with quiet but busy carbonation. There is a small amount of alcohol on the end.

Lots of stuff hapenning here and it’s all good. Very malty, several spices, and (to me) different hops on the back end. Never had a beer with that many different things going on - but it all works!!!

This bottle has about a year of bottle age on it. Muted nose. Very Belgian in style. Delicate taste. Nice and soft. Not much distinction though.

(bottle into trappist glass) Poured a dark brown (mahogany) with a one finger head that quickly diminished. Heavy malt aroma with lots of toasted molasses and toffee hints. It was sweet, but not overpoweringly so. Medium body with a nice happy carbonation released all the sweet flavors very well. There was little disappointment here! Paired very well with my hearty stew, but following it’s sister La Fin du Monde, the ABV of both did catch up with me!! It’s sneaky, be careful!

Aroma is rich, malty and spicy with a hint of yeast, quite inviting. It pours a clear dark amber, almost mahogany, with a thick pale orangy head. Rich flavor is malty, yeasty, spicy and slightly hoppy. Texture is fairly smooth, lively and fizzy, quite satisfying.

Bottled and poured into a tulip glass. UM pours muddy with a largish head that looks very appetizing. The nose is sweet with green raisins but also a touch of lima bean. The taste is nicely mild with a high carbonation content. A pleasant fruitiness dominates. The finish is full-bodied and lingers for just a few moments.

Cloudy deep brown in appearance with a fully diminishing off white head. Buttery, oaky nose. Maybe I got a bad bottle, but the aroma was weaker than I expected, although it did open up over time. Robust yeasty, malty flavor with strong alcohol. Carbonation was a bit more fizzy than I like.
