COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Murky brown with white head. Sweet caramel malt, floral hops, brown sugar, candies, dark fruit, mild banana, all-spice. Taste is bready malt, gingerbread, dark fruit, caramel, licorice. Springy carbonation that compliments the flavor. Medium to full palate. Dry finish. Quite good.

Candied dates on the nose. Dingy brown the wisps of solids collecting like smoke in the glass, medium head. Date flavor, but not too sweet. Bready finish. Nicely balanced, and not overbearing. Alcohol well blended.

pours dark brown with a big cream head which hung around doggedly. The nose was dominated by licorice and gingerbread, the perfect Christmas aroma! The taste though was rather surprising, lots and lots of caramel, backed up by cloves – almost like a light Christmas pudding, with a very subtle bitterness underscoring the sweetness. Despite the somewhat hefty kick of alcohol, Maudite is very smooth and was like drinking liquid fudge.

I wanted to really like this beer; and I did like it, but I didn’t love it. It poured a hazy, dark amber liquor with a one-finger, off-white head that is still presisting with an inch in the glass and as I write this reflection. The bouquet was spicy and sweet, with fruit, yeast and coriander dominant, but the bouquet is subtle and of low intensity. The body is thinner than I anticipated, tart-sweet, fruity and herbal with some malt thrown in as backdrop. The finish is short. All in all, it is true to style, and hasn’t any flaws, per se, but when I contrast it with--say--Goose Island’s Pere Jacques, I can honestly say that Maudite could be better than it is.

Hazy, dark amber with a frothy white head that dissapears quickly. Fruity aroma and taste. Sour after taste of citrus. Nice beer.
