In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Good belgian. Pours with a large, frothy egg white head, which fairly quickly completely dissipates. There is no lacing. Color is reddish golden. Flavor is spicy, yeasty. An excellent example of the sytle.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2004 Spicy scent, slight cider smell - crisp apples. Colour is dirty reddish-brown. Earthy. Small head, slightly cloudy. Taste has spice to it, slightly bitter but with a fine malty finish. Nice. My first Belgium-style strong ale and I like it very much. My second Unibroue (next to Blanche de Chambly) and I think it is excellent.

Deep brown/red colour with a mostly lasting off-white head, leaving plenty of lace. Aroma is raisin, plum, alcohol, pepper, and yeast. Flavours of raisin and gingerbread, with the alcohol coming through in the finish. Medium bodied, maybe a bit thinner than I expected, finishing with a nice bite.

Slightly cloudy peach color with a quickly deminishing medium tan head. Fruity, spicy aroma. Flavor is sweet, peppery, slightly bitter with a hint of orange, clove and coriander. Finishes with a lingering spicy aftertaste.

A very smooth and complex belgian. Coriander, caramel, and a little hop bitterness all blended well in the initial taste. Finished a little bit drier, but a good all around brew. Masks the alcohol very well.

Slightly cloudy amber with a large creamy off white head. Aroma of toffee, butter, alcohol. Good carbonation. Alcohol, pepper taste but the alcohol tste and warmth dominate as this becomes one dimensional.
