In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

lovely layered citrus and spice. extrordinary and complex. Had the bottle first (impressive) then the keg (even more so). Kudos Unibroue!

What a wild flavor. Kind of citrusy with a sweet aftertaste. Smooth but not a guzzler. Definitely another fine product from Unibroue. ;)

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2003 I had it again recently at Jane Bond in Waterloo. I'll have to raise my rating from a 3.9 it has a certain mild spiciness that I didn't notice all those years ago when I last had it. The smell was sweet the head was huge and light light tan. It even looks like an impressive brew. I really enjoyed this one. For a strong beer it was quietly tame but it was still there. Very Smooth and sweet. It went very well with my meal which was a thick bean soup that was awesome.

Beautiful golden color. Smooth from start to finish, barely a hit of alcohol. Has a sweet aroma, hints of citrus.

Has a cloudy amber color and a spicy smell, reminds me of a wheat beer. Taste is also like a wheat with full thick spicy flavor and finishes very smooth. Overall a very good beer that I could enjoy over and over again.

cranberries and citrusy scent very little head. surprisingly clear for such a strong ale. overall tangy flavor and aftertaste, pretty noticable alcohol content. first beer for my by the fire this winter... a good one for it!

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2003 a garbage bag of melons, leather, and squash turning a glowing orange in brilliance as it sat with limited lacing of atmospheric designs...starts thin palated but grows thicker from the seeds of its Belgian influenced yeasty existence...tartness plays of the yeast which in turn plays of the spice injecting a lingering sweetness that creeps along the entire experience…a strobe effect of orange peel, yeast, and cumbersome spicing finishes you off.

Little bit of an alcohol aroma - but still fruity. Pour was nice and thick and appearance was thick and cloudy - that of a dark fruit nectar with a thin ever present head - nice! Alcohol flavor is present throughout, but not overwhelming. Nice fruity flavor. Reminds nme of Bezelbuth - but not as overwhelming.
