COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Wow! Im impressed by this one. I had always seen it in the store, but finally broke down and got it at a bar in Houston. Had the traditional belgian nose...spices and fruits took over, hints of alcohol in the finish....well done!

Cloudy orange/amber with a long-standing head. Peppery orange aroma. Spicy orange zest, flowing on alcohol with a slightly bitter finish. A nice balance between malt and hops.

Fizzy pouring. Head disappears quickly. Smells a little like mulled cider, with an alcohol kick. The flavor is warm, gentle, with a bit of an alcohol burn going down. Very pleasant and full flavored, but still subtle. Nice beer.

On pour, there was a nice head that quickly dissolved, leaving a relatively clear orange-brown body. The aroma and flavor are both sweet and spicy. While that can be a good thing, I find that I donít much care for this particular spiciness. Champagne mouthfeel contrasts unusually with the alcohol undertones. Surprisingly mild aftertaste.

Really outstanding beer. Similar to a weiss, or maybe even a weissbock. I suprisingly really enjoyed it. The palate was full, the spices are well noticed but not overpowering, and no overwhelming fruit presence. One of a kind.

Rumor was this was a darker beer, but I was not disappointed. Strong alcohol flavor mixed with a pleasant spiciness. Canít wait for my next one.

I enjoyed a four pack with funk and while it does cost a dick and a ball the taste makes it all worthwhile. A great beer that I really canít say enough good things about!

Dark sludgy brown like a westmalle dubbel, but the head was short lived. Aroma initially suggests a trappist dubbell (westmalle, again) but develops into more of a rodenbach type woody spicyness, although not sour. Bread dough in the mouth with a fruity (fig?) spicy cakelike taste. Aftertaste is delicate but leaves behind the first hint of its taste. As I work my way through the Unibroue beer range, saving the strongest for last (I have a trois pistoles and a La Fin Du Monde left) I get more and more impressed.

re-rate 4/30/02. Had to lower the score. I really have a little trouble with the taste of the yeast. The color is nice. Medium dark reddish brown and cloudy. The head is a bit foamy and dissapates quickly. It has a mild pleasant smell. The flavor lacks some of the complexity that I would expect from a Belgian style brew, but the more I drank, the more I liked it. The alcohol only leaves the slightest footprint on the tongue -- just enough to let you know itís there. Overall, a good beer.

Rustlike color with a cloudy/yeasty appearance and a good deal of lace. A very quiet nose with some bready notes. No real hop nose. Spicy feel witha subtle hint of hop bitterness that cleans itself up by the end of the sip. Somewhat citrusy orange flavor with a hint of raisins and maple sugar.
