In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

UPDATED: NOV 6, 2005 Fresh bottle. Foam pours out of bottle as soon as the cap BLOWS of the bottle(12 oz.) Initial aroma highly pepper and corriander.Head is flowing out of the glass.Settles to a milkish ringy lace. Lovely mahogany appearence. Taste;begins with a very lemony, fruity flavor.Followed by a bite of pepper and corriander much like aroma. As it warms the dry subtle hoppy bitterness comes out and turns this into a wonderfully, satisfying ale.

Good yeasty and spicy aroma. Deep copper/red hue and a nice head. Aroma seems typical of Unibroue. Flavor is very fruity, hides alcohol very well. Complex. A nice, full mouthfeel is very appealing. One of my (if not the) favorite strong ale on my list.

This would be my favorite so far of the Unibroue line. Deep auburn brwon color. Flavors are more pronounced. Nice malt character that trails off before it gets too sweet. Solid.

Orangey-amber-brown in colour. Hints of citrus in the flavour. Beautiful long aftertaste. Can’t wait to have another.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2011 Yeasty nose. Effervescent and fluffy on the tongue. Has a subtle cake-like sweetness. Doughy and slightly fruity (apples and grapes), too. Dry, peppery finish. Pleasant beer.

A little lighter tasting than it looks. It avoids the overwhelming heavy malty sweetness in that is in other Belgian Ales.

Not my favorite Unibroue. I prefer the Pistoles, but this has a hint of hops and is a solid malty beer.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2003 In Unibroue terms, Trios Pistoles meets Don de Dieu. Reminded me very much of a Belgian Strong Ale-Weissber combo of some sort. Pretty apricot color with a large, rapidly fading head. Nose is rich, lots of citrus, cola, and nutmeg. Flavors of butterscotch, cream, lemon, and maybe something like peanut butter? Very fizzy brew, makes the tongue tingle. Very enjoyable.

My favorite of the Unibroue beer I have had, but still not among my favorite belgian strongs, a little too sour for my liking.

One of the first Belgian Ales I ever had and certainly one of the best.
