COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Bottle bought at Leclerc supermarket, Boulogne, France. A deep red murky brown coloured pour with a decent beige head. Aroma of spice and yeast. Tastes of apple, dark fruit, sweet, spice, bready. Very Belgian in character. Unibroue are top draw.

Pours burnt copper with a medium-full fluffy head that recedes slowly, rockily. Even 5 minutes after the pour there’s still a nice lingering head, enough so I’d probably have to wait way too long to see what the lacing is like. Nose is bread, caramel malt, yeast, with hints of fruit. Medium mouthfeel, crisp carbonation, slightly sweet malt leads into a bready finish. To me it’s good, but I just don’t think it’s great. I’m just not crazy about a lot of yeast/bread character, and in this one it really feels like it’s dominating the palate. It’s a funny beer because it looks gorgeous, and the mouthfeel and the way it hits the palate is fantastic, but the flavor and aroma just don’t do it for me. Consider this one of those great beers that I’m simply unable to appreciate.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy light brown with a medium sized off white head. It has the aroma of chocolate, caramel and herbs. It has a roasted taste, a slightly sour taste, a chocolate taste, a pear or plum taste and a slight lemon taste. I love this beer. It’s very complex but drinkable.

Bottle poured in tulip glass. I love the aroma, it smells peachy. A pretty amber color with a light beige head that clung to the sides of the glass moderately. The head was creamy and the palate was a smooth medium, there was a subtle yeasty graininess with a sweet flavor and a slight bitterness in the finish. This is a tasty beer

Bottle. Pours a dark ruby red colour (that becomes more like a murky brown, when the yeast is poored in), with a big frothy off white head. Aroma is of orange, apple, dough and spice like clove and cinnamon along with some plums and caramel malt aswell. Flavor is filled with toffee and caramel along wtih the orange, apple, plum and the typical Unibroue yeast flavor of dough, bready fruity noites. You also get some cinnamon and clove, but it is more subtle than in the aroma. The body is medium with a sliky smooth mouthfeel. Overall a pretty good Belgian Strong Ale, and probably my favorite from Unibroue so far.

Smell dark fruit, malts, hint of alcohol and hint of sweets, Great taste, very smooth mix of dark fruits, yeast, spices, malts, hint of sugar and hint of spice Not really bitter, a bit sweeter in the dark fruits. Pretty warm mouthfeel (alcohol).

Bottle. Lots of fruit in this one... Orange, peach, mango, grape. Yeasty hop. Caramel and ginger smoothes it out. Citrus... Nice variety of flavours. Great stuff!

Complex flavor mixed with a rich aroma makes this one of my favorites. Despite the high alcohol content, it is not overpowering, and delivers a smooth palatable texture. Not too heavy and not too light. This one is just unique.
