COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

1 year old bottle. Pours mahogany with an off-white khaki colored head. Aroma of pears, buttered toast, caramel, light maple, sauteed apples, and cinnamon. Tastes of caramel, toast, pears, sourdough, apples, and cinnamon spice. Finishes tangy with fruity esters (apples, pear), cinnamon, and bread dough. Medium bodied, high carbonation and efferevescent mouthfeel. I can’t really determine what makes one Unibroue beer better than another at this point, but they’re all worth trying more than once. Good.

Pours cloudy reddish amber with off-white head and some lacing. Notes of hay and spruce. Balanced taste with a slight bitter finish. Seems a bit heavy to drink.

750 mL bottle from the LCBO, served in a snifter. Pours hazy reddish orange with a tall, rocky tan head. The head has good retention and leaves a small amount of lace. On the nose are aromas of caramel, orange, yeast, cloves, coriander and pepper. The flavour is moderately malty sweet up front but becomes fairly bitter towards the finish. It is spicy throughout and the finish is malty with a hefty dose of alcohol. On the palate, it is medium in body with a dry, alcoholic texture and light carbonation. Overall, this is a very nice Belgian-style ale with that distinctive Unibroue yeastiness. It definitely grew on me as it developed. 2010-08-20

Served into an Unibroue snifter A: Pours reddish with a big head that stay, white spiderweb lace that stays stick to the side of the glass, small to no carbonation. S: Sweet smell, apples. For me it was thin in essence. T: Sweet a little bit tarty some like apple cider or some apple wine, a little bit warming, little lingering hop flavor, a hint of banana. Overall it was a fresh beer after all but a little bit thin in the taste and smell department I would re-drink it if possible just to know what’s the fuzz about.

“distinctive and complex” I concur. The alcohol isn’t masked by a very light floral hop taste. Deep caramel color with a distinct banana and a moderate spice. A delightful creamy and rich mouthfeel with high notes of alcohol gaining as you move toward the bottle of the bottle. I look forward to my next ride on the flying canoe.

Great beer. Resembles a sour red ale, aroma of sweet caramel malts, sour cherries, fruits. Pours dark brown/red. Great palate, fizzy and full bodied, very refreshing. Tastes of sour cherry, honey sweetness, light yeast and sweet fruits.
