COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Hazy brown with a white head. Take a whiff of this and you smell caramel malts, dark fruits, and spices. This is what I’d call a near full bodied beer with aggressive and fizzy carbonation. Smooth tasting caramel malts, raisins, and banana taste with a little bit of bitterness to round it out. The alcohol from this one is masked very well. Yummy!

A favorite in our household. It is one of those strong beers that still manages to be very drinkable. Lovely stuff. Serving: Bottle and Tap

Beautiful white head and dark copper caramel color brew. Aroma is of tart dates. Excellent brew with a hint of alcohol present in the taste.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber brown with off-white head that disappears quickly. Aroma of dried fruits and plums. Taste is lightly sweet and a little heavy. Smooth mouth feel. High carbonation. Pretty good beer, though it has a somewhat high alcohol content, I can’t taste it much.

Color is a dark raisin/carmel brown. Head is a thin light off white. Medium level of lacing. Smell is of bananas and cloves. Dried fruit also. Taste is quite similar. The banana flavor is very strong. The 8% abv becomes present in the taste as well. There is also a grassy hop flavor to it. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. After it lingers around enough, the alcohol becomes over powering. Overall, a solid beer at 8%. Pretty easy to drink and quite tasty. I’d easily have another. 22 ounce bottle. Pours a ruby mahogany with minimal head. First sniff is funky with a capital F. Trying to discern the aroma is tough. I get figs, almonds, spice, and a tinge of alcohol. Let’s just call it complex and call it good. Honestly it’s really hard to know what to expect from this beer with the first drink. Flavor is delicious, though almost irrepressibly sweet. There are tons of fruity spices up front, followed by a very desert dry middle, with mild hops and huge alcohol in the finish. Actually easy to drink, considering everything that’s going on. Better than average, strike that, actually very nice. Enjoyable. Nice end-of-night beer.

12 oz bottle given to me by my friend Jill because it’s one of her favorites and I’d never had it. Poured into a tulip glass it was a dark brown with some cloudiness and not much of a head. Aroma was dark fruit (plums, dates, figs), yeast, maybe some cherry. The flavor was brown sugar, plum, fig, light bit of yeast, some raisin. Very smooth and tasty brew, a nice complement to last night’s Rock Band session.

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2010 Bonne bière rousse assez forte en alcool. Belle étiquette rappelant la légende de la chasse galerie...plusieurs soirée arrosé lors de mes études à Trois-Rivières.
