COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Got a sampler pack of Unibroue at Trader Joe’s...not sure what I expected, but this is quite good. A very dark pour, fairly sweet aroma and definitely a sweet taste to it. Probably a tad sweeter than I generally prefer, but a nice changeup.

Bottle 355ml. Heavenly. Aromas of bread, dough, caramel, and alcohol. Taste starts sweet, and has a sour touch with lingering bitterness. Palate is sticky and full bodied, with a long finish. Amber, with a thin frothy head.

UPDATED: JUL 1, 2010 Guess this is the most fitting beer to listen to Pink Floyd’s "Great Gig In the Sky". Maybe because of the flying boat, the daring devil or, most likely, the real trip that this beer makes one have. From the aroma, the apple comes fiercily along with malt, brown sugar, some hop, quite a nice fruitness and spice to it. Coriander and orange appeared bringing some elegance to the dar orange beaverage. Great beer, a great way to know Unibroue.

Shared this one w/ SkyCop32. Pours a darkish red/brown. Aromas of spice, coriander, yeast, and alcohol. Flavor has an alcohol taste to it, mixed with a nice smokey dark fruit. Also has strong hints of spice and orange.

Bottle.

I’m surprised that I have yet to rate this one. Sweet dried-fruit nose with a bit of cider; flavor of mulling spice and raisins, some brown sugar, but a metallic twist to the hopping that is typical to Unibroue and not entirely a good thing. Prickly carbonation is a bit much for the style. Still, enjoyable enough beer.
