Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Mammoth off-white pillowey head that rivals Duval in intensity and staying power. Lacing is not as good as I was expecting. Dark honey-amber color similar to maple syrup. Distinctive Belgian yeast aroma. Some coriander, clove, allspice, but not overpowering. Sweet malts. Delicious flavor. Similar to aroma, some hints of bubblegum, some alcoholic bitterness, fruity, sweet malt, very well balanced. Smooth, not overly thick mouthfeel, especially given the high ABV. LIghtly carbonated. Warming on the way down. Excellent brew from Unibroue. Very drinkable, and especially good with my dinner tonight, which is a spinach salad with grilled chicken, mandarin oranges, bleu cheese and Makoto Ginger dressing. Highly recommended.

12 oz bottle thanks to Mike for bringing a four pack to enjoy while screaming at Big Brown to "run faster you idiot". Aromas of yeast dough, malt. Flavors of appricot and bread. Good stuff!

Corked bomber poured hazy reddish brown - the color of wood stain - with a generous three finger head that lasted a long time and left nice lacing. Bread and yeast are evident in the smell, which included some spice and fruit. I’m not usually impressed by the way a beer smells, but these aromas seemed complex and well balanced. Malt and fruit up front - with the fruit better defined as apples and cherries. A bit of black pepper and tartness (but not sour)as well, and mild hop bitterness to round it out. Medium bodied, lively carbonation and a very pleasant aftertaste. Great beer.

Bottled. Huge aroma of fruity portwine. Taste a bit less, very bubbly, finish is better than the initial, soapy flavour. Looks good.

Pours a copper amber with very light tan colored head that dissipates to a thin layer. Aroma is dried fruit with definite sweet honey notes. Flavor is yeast/malts with sugar. Aftertaste almost has a sour note. Body is medium with quite a bit of carbonation. Could almost go a little less on the carbonation levels.

Pours cloudy magnificent orange with a mediujm tan head that shows beautiful lacing on the glass. Nose is orange, apricot, honey. Flavor of honey, peppery yeast, apricot, orange peel. Fairly sweet and malty. Finishes crisp, flowery, and light. Alcohol is mildly and pleasantly present. As it warms a funky, musty cheese flavor comes towards the end of the swallow. I love it love it love it.

Unibroue consistently brews a high-quality product. And by high, I mean Himalayan. Maudite for me is no exception, possibly even my current favourite of their year-round offerings.

Appearance: A cloudy copper-red.

Aroma: A bouquet of sugar, cloves, and dark cherries.

Taste: Wheat, perhaps something akin to a faint peanut brittle...I can’t resist simply calling it, "ambrosia."

Palate: spritzy and quenching. As the Unibroue people describe it themselves, a cognac-like finish.

Overall: What a brew! This one is great all by itself. Also try it with hearty foods that otherwise might get the chianti or merlot treatments: pasta, tomato-based dishes, red meat (beef stew!), or artisanal pizza. A clear winner all-around.

Poured a cloudy amber with minimal head although visibly effervescent. Mildly malty/fruity aroma. Palate was medium body with carbonation most prominent regarding mouth feel. Strikes me as a combination of a dubbel and strong ale with it’s fruity flavors and aroma. This was Unibroue was alright but not something I’d pick up again.
