COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

750ml bottle. drank out of snifter. aroma is of intense malts and spices, banana and clove. a bit of cognac in there too. pours an orangy brown with a frothy off white head and leaves some nice lacing. flavour is sweet, but not too sweet. an assertive hop finish makes this wonderful beer from unibroue nicely balanced.

spicy, ginger scent. dark with light lacing, minimal head. light bodied. i enjoyed this one quite a bit but the spiciness is a little much for me.

A: Pours a nice hearty robust red color with a medium head into the Maudite Tulip....how else would you drink it? There is a steady stream of small bubbles rising to the top which keeps this red brew bubbling like lava. S: Nice malty aroma with tons of dark fruits noted. I smell Figs, Black Cherries, and a hint of dried Apricot. Behind all of that there is a mild hoppiness to this brew. I detect a slight aroma of orange peel. Refined.... I think so! T: Quite possibly the best brew to come out of Canada. It is right up there with La Fin Du Monde another Unibroue offering. I actually think I prefer this one though. There is just more substance to it. I taste tons of nice sweet malty fruits. Cherries, Apricots, Orange, and Peach. The Malty backbone is splendid but there is a wee bit of hops in here with the taste of lemon or lime zest. It’s complex yet very refined. I love the Unibroue beers and Canada should hang their hat on these because it is NO DOUBT ABOUT IT...it is the best they have to offer. M: Medium bodied. Slightly effervescent, yet very drinkable.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2009 750 mL Bottle. Pours an amber brown colour with a dissipating white head. The aroma is of spice and fruit. There is a lot of spice in the taste as well, its is sweet and malty too. The beer is enjoyable even though I am not one for beers that have a lot spice flavour to them.

UPDATED: NOV 18, 2010 Bottle. Hazy bronze, beige head that rapidly become just a rim and 1mm layer. Berries and cherries, some earthy aromas. Inviting. Quite carbonated and light. Some overt alcohol. Sweetness balance with citrus. Dry finish. [3.5]

A little warmer (14C), poured into a tulip rather than a Trappist glass. Nice head now and perhaps the palate is improved by the slightly warmer temperature - but mostly I’m just liking this family of styles more. [4/10: 3.8]

Head fades and returns briefly with a swirl. Quite carbonated but works for the mouthfeel. Dark and dried fruits with quite severe drying finish.

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2010 A terrific beer. This, while being a belgian-type ale, appeals to those of us who enjoy the qualities of British ales - while remaining faithful to the complexity, thickness, and malty sweetness of a belgian double. This is one of Unibroue’s best offerings.

33 cl bottle, Fargo, ND, USA via Winnipeg. Hazy apricot colour, vibrant carbonation with a thick frothy pond-scum like head. Bread, cloves, and alcohol aroma. Sweet, full body and quite smooth for the strength. Mild nuttiness at the end with medium alcohol and some faint sourness easing through. Very enjoyable.
