Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Bottle. Aroma of yeasty esters that present themselves in an odd Fruity Pebbles way. Caramel and toffee behind, but the yeast component dominates. Pours a dark ruby/copper with a thin skin of an off white head. Plenty of yeast on the palate with green pepper, dry crass and slightly soured citrus fruit. Medium bodied with a ton of carbonation leading to a slightly vinous finish. Thanks Matt!

Pours reddish brown with off white head. Bready aroma with typical Unibroue yeast smell. Slightly sweet flavor with some yeast and spices. Meduim body with prickly carbonation. A good Belgian strong ale.

33 cL bottle. Pours hazy hazzlenut brown with a dense off-white head. Yeasty aroma with a notes of caramel malt. Flavour is mild fruity, yeasty, and with a mild and somewhat dry caramel malt. Light yeast fruity finish.

Bottle 33 cl. This is definitively not as good as I first thought. Looks beatiful but tastes like... Hmm.. Nothing actually, a bit vinous and som red berries, but not much more.

Knowing the legends and stories behind a beer before you drink it really makes a huge difference on your enjoyment of the brew. In this instance, the story was told by Rick Swarez, from Unibroue, at an excellent beer tasting I attended. As for the beer itself: I was first greeted by a devilish looking ale, crimson/caramel brown to an amberish, red hue and topped with a sinister white head. My nostrils were infiltrated with caramel maltiness (perfectly balanced) toffee, cinammon, cloves and brown sugar, which all mingled on the tongue. The beer is excellently crafted, remniscent of a lighter style abbey dubbel with smooth, velvety, well-rounded maltiness and an ever-so haunting alcohol presence, ending with a bittersweet cocoa finish. Terrifyingly good.

Poured a hazy copper color with two finger of head that dissapeared rather quickly. The nose was strong with clove, corriander and cinnamon with a backbone of sweet toffee malts. The taste started spicey with clove, pineapple and ripe apricots. This beer also has a very prominent toffee malt profile that I found very pleasing. As it warmed alcohol became more noticable but didn’t affect the taste at all. Malt and pepper tones linger on in the finish. Extemely drinkable and an overall tasty brew.

Pours a deep ruby into the glass with small head. Aroma is sweet and yeasty. Taste is fruity with a big punch of warmth coming from the alcohol. Slightly sweet

Pours a rusty/muddy brown with a medium off-white head. Belgian yeast aroma of slightly soured fruit. Kind of sharp tastes. Spicey and sour. Some dark fruit (plum, raisin) flavors. Finish is dry and lingers for a while. Not a favorite Unibroue.
