Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

750ml bottle from LCBO. Murky brown with a foamy light tan head. Very yeasty aroma and a powerful bubbly yeasty fruit taste that is standard for the Unibroues. For me, the Unibroues were an acquired taste. At first I had a hard time with the strong yeasty aroma and taste. Still have a bit of a hard time with it but have to admit that it’s growing on me and the Maudite is hard not to like.

Hazu orange with a dense head. Frutiy aroma with notes of plume and overripe fruits. Spicy flavours (dades and plumes), sweet and sligthly bitter with some warming alcohol.

Big, powerful and sporting one of the most warming alcohol scents I can remember, this is good attempt at a Belgian’s Belgian. Over the years I’ve enjoyed this beer quite a few times and always had favored sentiments about it. It remains a great beer: powerful yeasts, spicy and aromatic, large-bubbled delicious foam and an overall quality of a brew well crafted. Still, today part of the former glory seems to have somewhat evaporated. Maybe they changed the brewer? Either way, a grand old salut to the Belgian Canadians for continuing their hallowed craft.

An interesting orange and red color, creamy white head with a slow vocanic eruption of bubble and new foam forming in the middle of the glass, this must be how hawaii formed. Fruity plum bannana and pear aroma and an absence of hops. Rock candy and raisin flavor. A full malt flavor takes away the big alcohol sting associated with dubbels and trippels. A small mix of hops keeps this gem from being too sweet. Like many Belgiums, the palate is complex and full. Another top tier beer from Unibroue.

A muddy reddish-brown beer with a large off-white head that dissappears. Aroma of apples, very tart. Basically smells like Martinelli’s soft apple cider. Flavor of light fruit and spice, also tart. Not much of a finish, a little dry. The mouthfeel is very light and effervescent. Alchohol well-hidden. I like Unibroue’s other ales, but I think they missed here.

dry and slightly sweet. Great aroma. Something about the %60 palate could be better, but the finish is far better than average. Poured correctly, not too heady.

Smells like apple juice at first. Pours with a ton of foam, what belgian that’s bottle conditioned doesn’t? Color is dirty water cloudy copper. Aroma is mild/strong malty, and it seems a good hop balance as well with a tinge of sweetness and alcohol. The beer bubbles well. The head is dense, small-bubble foam, and fizzy. The flavor is of sweet, dark fruit, wild yeast, citrus and malt. The finish is a bit rough.
