Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Trappist glass. Pours dark brown with a medium head. Aroma of toffee, raisins, and yeast. Tast of malt annd spices. Has an aromatic hop finish. Med/high carboantion. Has a lot of nice noted to it, but it could come together a bit more nicely. Overall, a good beer.

Sampled at Food and Froth. Too bad my sample glass was only 8 oz.; I’ll be trying a bottle soon! Complex and tasty combination of Belgian Ale and cidery taste -- was served a bit too cold to experience the full onslaught of flavors but still awfully good.

12 oz. bottle from the Unibroue sampler pack. Poured a brownish dark amber with a prominent tan head that does not die very much and laces well. Aromas of alcohol infusion and some light fruitiness that one might equate or identify to a belgian ale (Surprised?!?) with some somber notes that might be considered wheaty. Tastes of light kick with a lively fruitiness and touch of spice. Warming alcohol sensation that lingers. Finish is typical of the smooth belgian feel. This brew has character, but it subued compared to what I expected. A good belgian strong but not my favorite.

A wonderful beer. It is dark, slightly brownish amber, very faintly hazy, with a huge off-white head that lasts a long time, coating the glass but not really leaving well-dfined lace. The aroma is alcohol/wine with fruit, bread, orange juice, and qualities of a hefeweizen and Duvel. The taste is compelx and lively, tingly, fruit, spicey, with orange, caramel, and a warming fullness of alcohol without the alcohol coming on too strongly. It is wonderful, satisfying, complex.

pours a hazy brown color with a thin clumpy head. smells of light fruit, spice, and alcohol. I don’t know if my palate isn’t sophisticated enough to appreciate this stuff, but it tastes like over cooked carrots to me. finishes sweet and spicy with some alcohol warmth.

Dark amber hazy pour. Lively in the mouth. Aroma is sweet and loud with alcohol. The alcohol is well hidden in the taste and only comes out as a warmth. Sweet malt with a dash of spice.

Corked bottle. Foggy amber pour, medium head which faded quickly. Citrusy aroma, though fairly subtle. Nice flavor; yeasty, citrusy with hints of banana and spice. However, the flavor is somewhat overpowered by the intense carbonation, though it subsided somewhat as the beer warmed. Good beer, but not great.
