COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Too sweet for the style, not balancing so much with the bitterness. Good impression on the palate, medium-full bodied, lively carbonation, fairly alcoholic finish. Nice dark ambar color, large head, with good retention.

BB 8/27/2011 Pours a deep orange-brown with moderate white head, which mostly diminishes. Aroma of alcohol, spice, pine, fig and cinnamon. The alcohol and spice hit the palate, but surprisingly it is a very well-balanced brew with a good finish. Pepper, fruits, spicey sugar and caramel malt. One of the few beers I’ve had that seems to warm up the belly - Cheers to my first Unibroue offering!

Pours orange-brown (or "mahogany" if you like!) with a white head that goes away. Lovely, lively aroma of pine needles and citrus with just a hint of candy and a very faint background of pepper. Does Unibroue make just one beer and then put it in different bottles? No. This is proof! Creamy, spicy, a rather luxurious palate with the carbonation mirroring the spice! Candy, light caramel, fruit, pepper. The finish is just shy of great.

Strange to be rating this live on Good Friday, though Trappist monks may approve...pours a darkly sinister ruby body in THE Maudite glass, with a creamy, thick white head that steadily levels to a quarter-inch... the balance of sugary malt and bitter hops is noticeable in its dense bouquet--neither competes, but the heat is present... first sip in is Hades itself, warming and full-bodied with a swift kick to the throat. Little aftertaste and balanced flavors on the tongue are a plus, even as the throat feels the gentle heat that its name implies. Spices abound in the tastebuds, with a bit of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a few unidentifiable bits taking the flavor to a complexity most winter warmers would dream of--no syrupy drip or spruce tree pine corniness here... I could see this beer posessing a dinner-table versatility as well as being a desertif. Still nursing this case brother Jer fetched for me in October, I cannot help but wonder what I would drink if I lived in Montreal...what a treat, and what a brewery.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2009 341 mL Bottle. Murky amber-copper body with a 1-finger off-white foamy head leaving good lace. The aroma is a bouquet of banana, melons, plums, raisins, figs, spices, and a little hint of cherry. This is a full-bodied beer that impresses me like a good Hefe: a full malty-fruity flavor with a rich finish of dark fruits and spices. Alcohol also expresses in the taste in a way that warms me up from inside. Easter weekend... what a time to rate this beer! This devilish decadence is ideal to pair up with Christmas dinner (or Easter dinner) after some fun and frolic in the wintery outdoors.
