COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Lightly off white head sits forever on top of a red-brown ruby body. Dark fruit aroma, some malt and a light alcohol and yeast spice. Taste is a smooth raisin, fig, plum fruitiness, sweet malt base, hidden alcohol.

Spring for a Gulden Draak. While the Maudite is good, it (to me) feels like a smoother, less-spectacular Gulden Draak. Thick white head on top of a dark woody-colored body which is awesome in Belgians. Warming alcohol with not much but yeasty and some malty flavors going on. Solid, but not remarkable.

A murky brown ale with hints of nicotine and a lively off-white head. It smells positively Belgian. All dark malts and plummy fruits; very sweet with hints of bitterness hidden deep within. Sweet and raisiny follow up in the mouth with lovely rich and intense fruits. A burnished malty glow. Warming and hearty. Thick, real thick and smooth too. I do like this. Tasty and complex. Dark and moody but easy going. It holds together well and leaves a warm boozy glow in the throat.

750ml bottle in Duvel glass. Reddish with lasting flat head. Candy sugar and red fruit and yeast aroma. Strong toasted candy sugar and fruit with mild bitter fruity finish. Medium body. Very sweet, overwhelming candy sugar cloying . Not my style, I guess.

On tap at Dilly Deli. A light brown/orange color with a small head. Aroma of candied sugar with citrus and dark fruit. Taste is sweet and spicy with subtle alcohol. Lively carbonation is very pleasing to the palate. Another great brew from Unibroue that ranks with some of the best Belgians.

Bottle. Tea colored brown orange, medium ivory head. Spicy bread nose. A little thin, bready, clove, bit of caramel, fruit. A good Belgian, but doesn’t differentiate itself much from other Unibroue beers.

12oz bottle from Willow Bend Liquors in Lutz, FL. Pours a copper color with a medium beige head. Aroma is orange, cocoa, and some alcohol coming through. Initial flavor is orange and caramel, then finishes with cocoa and a decent amount of alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and a bit sticky...but a great warming finish. Overall...this is a very solid belgian strong...I could drink a bunch of this...Perfect beer for sitting on the beach on a cool breezy night.
