COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Muddy brown with medium head. Aroma of cinnamon and allspice. Full bodied, tastes of brown sugar and malt. A keeper.

Pours red with amber hues and a white foamy head, 1/4 inch. Spicy apple nose with brown sugar and caramel. Taste is apple and raisin with brown sugar and alcohol. Very Unibroue-esque. Tasty, but not very different from their lineup.

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2010 Pours a murky brownish orange with a small tan head that fizzles down nicely. Aromas of yeast, dark fruits, raw cane sugar, caramel malt. Taste is bubbly up front then subsides for a Grand Marnier-like kick with some warming alcohol at the end but the 8% is nicely hidden. Creamy mouthfeel. Dry and spicy aftertaste. Awesome. 4

Re-rate 9.2.09: 750 mL. Beautiful in the glass: a cloudy raspberry color. Big tan head with excellent retention. Aroma is cherry cola, lots of mustiness, earthiness, dirt. Taste is a bit chemical, yeasty. Dry on the palate. 8% is well hidden. Not as spectacular as I remember. 3.6

Deep brown pour, cloudy reddish hue. Thin but lasting creamy head. Some lacing. Really sparkling, surprisingly so. Yeast, fruits, and sweet maple bread in the nose. The flavor adds something almost sour, but not unpleasant. A solid Belgian ale.

Pours orange-amber with a quarter inch of head. Head subsides but not too much. Smell of fruit and thank weird funk that unibroue beers have. I wonder if it’s the water. Yup I’d have to see it’s the H20 that makes that smell. Sweet maple wood with a zesty kick. Pretty good like most Unibroue beers. That orangey liquor flavor isn’t bad even though it doesn’t hide the alcohol enough. The carbonation however is lively to the point where combined with the flavor is a bit much and makes this feel like too much. Like usual I can have one of these at a time. Unibroue beers are great in moderation [as in 1]. Overall a really good beer!

Smells and tastes like a dark saison. Lightly hoppy, moldy, wet hay, earth but drinkable. Funk kinda ruins.

Complex aroma: gumball, funk, spice, brown sugar. Hazy brown, with a dense, active tan head, leaves a generous lacing. Sweet with raw sugar and raisins, malty, alcohol well hidden among gumball, cinnamon, and generalized fruits. Some toffee on the finish. Creamy, leaves a lingering mulled smoothness on the palate.

Pours a murky dark copper colour with a thin white head. Smells of soft fruit, cloves, cinnamon and yeast. Tastes of soft over-riped fruits, some sour apple cloves, cinnamon and the distinct unibroue yeast taste. Good complex beer
