In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

2010 (4 and half years old) 750 ml bottle.... wow I know one thing about that beer ... let it age at least 3 years old !!! dark hazy redish/amber color . not as much of an head than a young one but that’s what I would expect from a 4 years old beer. the caramel clove smell is a bit more shy but more complex and much more enjoyable. the taste is amazing, very grainy, no bitterness at all, the alcohol is absent from the taste. The first glass feels very delicate(since the yeast is all at the bottom of the bottle)the second one is very different. much more tasty and mellow, unibroue’s yeast age so well. very rich sweetness! wow. one of Unibroue’s flagpole since the start!! what is amazing with this beer is that you can match it with almost any kind of food ! cheers

341ml bottle from The Only Cafe. Amber body with frothy off white head. Aroma of plums, caramel, slightly bready, some malty notes. Fizzyness coats the mouth immediately with the warmth of elevated alcohol. Raisins, Plums, Earthy, some malty sweetness.

330 ml bottle into a tumbler. Pours a deep hazy mahogany with a lasting, fluffy off-white head. Aroma of plums with a bit of caramel. Rich and sweet in the mouth; warming, but not boozy. A touch of sour finish. Delightful.

Unibroue classic since 1992, this Belgian-style heavy ale boasts a complex and tempting aroma of chocolate, cocoa powder, gingerbread, banana, orange and cloves; sweet taste, deep maltiness, exciting spicy notes, warming alcohol finish. Very well-made, very satisfying and better than many actual Belgian examples of the style.

Transfer from BA review on 11-5-12- Poured from bottle into Delirium Tremens Tulip glass Appearance – Pours a deep ruby/mahogany color with a big cream colored head. The head fades leaving a modest level of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell - The aroma is a blend of fruit, booze, bread and yeast. The strongest are fruit aromas of a red wine grape smell with apple and orange mixed within. With all these aromas is also a spice aroma which goes quite nicely with the bready and yeasty aromas. Taste – The taste begins bready with some spicy flavors. The brew quickly sweetness as the fruit flavors detected in the nose come to the tongue. It begins with the apple and orange coming to the tongue, with the red grape soon following. The wine like characteristics get stronger. More red grape comes to the tongue and is accompanied by an increase in the alcohol flavor as well. In the end these booze and wine flavors, when mixed with some of the breadiness and spice from the beginning of the taste creates a very warming feel on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather average in terms of creaminess and thickness with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. They are quite nice for the style with the carbonation nice for the fruity flavors of the brew. Overall – A fruity and wine like brew with a good bready and boozy taste. Rather tasty and enjoyable.
