COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

UPDATED: OCT 7, 2008 Corked bottle 750 ml, purchased at LCBO
Appearance: murky dark amber with hint of red. Large frisky creamy pillow like top. 4+
Nose: Clean nose. Blend of yeast, caramel malt, assorted fruits, Belgian spice and smooth alcohol. 7+
Flavor/Palate : Medium full bodied. Lighter front with blend of raw green bitterness, yeast, alcohol. Together those parts cooperate gracely. Ending in smooth Belgian strong ale way. You know alcohol is present but it’s not pushy as in many American Strong Ales. Solid brew.

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2005 Head is initially large, frothy, off-white, fully lasting. Body is hazy medium amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately hoppy (flowers, lemon, herbs), moderately yeasty (cobwebs), moderately malty (cookie), with notes of orange, clove, pear, coriander, banana, and alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet, moderately acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter, short. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. As with my previous ratings of this (I keep wanting to like this more due to the aroma), the finish is rather abrupt and the flavor and mouthfeel too simple/sweet/watery. The aroma and appearance are definitely lovely, but it’s just not that much fun to drink.

Pours with a nice medium amber with a tight off white head. Good lace. Aroma is yeasty and spicy with lots of fruity esters and lightly spiced. Flavor has a good amount of caramel malt, spice, yeast, bready malts, and even some cobweb like mustiness in there. Mouthfeel is medium due to the high carbonation, but finishes pretty smooth. Cant believe I hadnt rated this one before now- good thing I took notes at Cooperstown.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2007 Bottled, May 2007, 3.7: Intense sweet aroma with raisin, prune and licorice wood. Brown color, beige head, fair lace. Sweet, prune, orange, raisin, light bitter. Cloying and warming. Complex and very flavorful but if you try to rate it objectively it must be said it’s also a little out of balance. Bottled, 4.1: Strong apple aroma. Hazy, dark amber/brown color, beige frothy/creamy head, good lace. Sweet, lots of complex fruits (apple, raisin, grapes), nicely hopped. More than medium full body.

Deep amber color with a voluminous light tan head. Ton of fruit blended with orange zest, coriander and white pepper. Dry honey finish. that lingers. Warming and pleasant.

On tap at the Hop Leaf Chicago - Golden color with a small creamy head, fair lacing, full-bodied. Very nice aroma with hints of cereal, pine, yeast, honey, and raisin. Somewhat vinous. Flavor matched the aroma, creamy and buttery. Light alcohol presence detected on the finish. Good stuff, recommmended.

Bottle. Peach, yeast and malt aroma. Dark amber color with small head. Sweet peach malt flavor with moderate hops and alcohol in the finish. A great, easy drinking beer.
