COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

The flavor and aroma of this beer are very similar to Victory Golden Monkey. I realize that they are the same style of beer, but I’ve had other belgian strongs, and these two beers are like brothers. However, unlike Golden Monkey, the fruit and spice flavor isn’t as noticable or enjoyable. If you have the choice, buy the monkey.

Bottle. Says best before March 2009, so I’m guessing it’s a few years old. Pours unclear orange/brown with a beige head. Sweet malt aroma, with fruit, caramel, yeast and nutmeg. Soft, medium body, quite a bit of carbonation. Flavor is again sweet. Ir has a lot going on but it’s very well balanced. Fruity, yeasty, and spicy. Notes of apple, peach, caramel, clove, chestnut, and floral hops. Short, dry finish, with a touch of yeast and a very slight bitterness. Very nice. Very drinkable and very tasty.

Bottle at Peculier Pub. Pours a lovely read hue with a fine, short-lived white head. Aroma is faint malty sweetness, spices and mild farmhouse yeast. Flavor is quite delicate: Light caramel and fruitiness, with some sourness in the middle, ending with fine bitterness. Medium body with soft carbonation. Crisp finish. Nice complexity while still refreshing.

Amber colour with a small light brown head. Complex aroma of malts, spices and fruits. Bitter sweet taste. Good palate.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2005 Had this in Toronto on tap and recently in the corked bomber bottle. Fantastic rich malt flavor in this belgian style ale. Hilarious label art of the flying canoe. Reddish-brown in color. High alcohol. Grab a bottle whenever you see it and it gets better with age.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2004 2003 12 oz bottle. Pours a muddy brown, with some drab oranges and reds. Good beige head. Smells of alcohol, strong caramel malt, sugary phenols and some dry citrus fruits. Begins surprisingly restrained and very well balanced, lightly malty and dry, with a hint of earthiness. Unibroue yeast settles in on the medium-full body and there is a delightful flavor of currants and raisins. Good mouthfeel, lightly watery, but better as it warms.

This is a very good beer from a great brewery. I prefer La Fin, but this is still very good.

Reviewed from notes. Pours dark brown with a tan head and some lacing. The nose is sweet with a bit of citrus as well as some clove and other spicing. Combines well with the typical dark Belgian characteristics. Brings a nice amount of dark fruit and caramelized sugar. Nice body with soothing amounts of carbonation. Drinks quite well. Along with Trois Pistoles, perhaps my favorite beer from them. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-24-2010
