COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Candied dates on the nose. Dingy brown the wisps of solids collecting like smoke in the glass, medium head. Date flavor, but not too sweet. Bready finish. Nicely balanced, and not overbearing. Alcohol well blended.

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2005 Rating # 2 Bottle 2005 Vintage (6 3 7 3 15) - A cloudy brown tea color with a rich tan head. The aroma has a light fruit (pear) element with spices and yeast. Dry and spiced complimented by honey, light fruits, and flowers. Rating #1 Bottle (6 3 7 3 14). A little too much Champagne like spritz on the palate. It tastes like a watered down version of a real Belgian. I get all the hints of the spiciness and Beligian essence, but generally get little flavor and diluted body. A Belgian on training wheels?

12 oz. bottle at Lula’s in Chicago, 7/18/07. Pour is reddish brown with some haziness. Aroma is yeast, earthiness some plum and pepper. Taste is the sweet fruit malts, yeast and the spicy pepper towards the finish. I had this with the goat cheese appetizer, and it was a very nice pair.

Plastic sample cup at the Penn Museum. Murky orange gold. Sweet with some spice but not quite together. Light yeast. I like to see more assertiveness in a strong ale.

330ml bottle, Quinns, 12th August 2007 (with Mes and Sim). Pours a cloudy brown with a sweet, toffee aroma. Flavour-wise, it’s sweet - a mix of caramel, warm alcohol and spicy apples. However, the palate is full first but then dissolves into a watery finish. Overall, I felt this was a beer that promised a lot, but ultimately does not deliver, when compared to the likes of Trois Pistoles, Westvleteren or St. Bernardus.

Bottled. Foggy amber body with a dirty brown head. Slight sweet aroma, hazel nut and a little bit of dryness. Doesn’t really show the alcohol.

12oz bottle. Hazy and ruby brown. Bready, caramel nose. Woody and cola. Fruity and alcohol. Fruity and caramel sweet flavor. Lively and cloying. Sweet. Full bodied and nice alcohol burn. Slight coffee, bittersweet chocolate, raisin, port flavors. Sweet, yet whiskyish. Citrus and spice and pepper. Delicious!

Light brown caramel coloured with some very light carbonation and a small white head. Sweet yeasty fruity caramel like aroma. Full palate with some sprankling. Finish is sweet, little burned with a touch of alcohol. Rather short but intensive ending. Very good.
