COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Bottle at World of Beer Gainesville. Pours murky dark reddish brown with a creamy off white head. Sweet plum and cherry aroma, lots of big sweet malts, a bit of toffee, more fruits, a little spice. Flavor follows with a really smooth fruity plum and cherry note, not much spice, and a bit on the sweet side. The flavor here is really nice, but I wish they pulled back just a tad on the sweetness. Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. Worth drinking whenever around, but I was expecting so much more given the reputation.

Somewhat mild for the style though, making it easier to drink than its cousin Le Fin du Monde. Very cloudy orangey-amber perhaps would be lighter if not for the plethora of suspended yeast. Very foamy. Lightly spicy and yeasty aroma. Fizzy palate with mild sweetness. Mild notes of berries. Yeasty finish.

"nose and flavor of over ripe fruit and heavy spice/yeast character. too much for me in fact. it’s complex, but comes off as a bit harsh. definitely not this brewers best. looks similar to unfiltered apple cider. efervecent head dissipates quickly."

Bottle. Clear amber pour, lasting small disc of carbonation and an aroma of caramel, some nuts and a little clove on the finish. Flavor is also nice spicy clove, good and malty and finished crisp with a little flavor of nuts and red apple rind.

330ml bottle poured in a La Trappe chalice. A: Very nice bottle art. Pours a nutty-brown color with a medium bubbled beige head. Cloudy. Small retention and just few lacings left S: Complex. Very Unibroue, I mean, very characteristic smell of Unibroue yeasts. Very spicy and flowery too. Coriander. A bit fruity. Notes of honey, nuts and caramel malts. And a bit of alcohol in the end T: The best part. Very candy and molasses sensation nevertheless, just a little bit sweet. Dark fruits, mainly raisins. Quite intense bitterness. Despite the sweet smell, the taste is dry. Intense on caramel malts and nuts. Aftertaste is quite spicy with strong notes of coriander and cinnamon M: Creamy and molasses. Intense and with a nice and soft bitter aftertaste O: Not as good as Trois Pistoles or La Fin Du Monde but still a great beer [ BA Review @ 4/19/2011 ]

Unibroue never fails to be very enjoyable...well, maybe those goofy Ephemere ones. This is a fine example of Quebec doing Euro-beers brilliantly. Sexy golden-rusty light brown with an off-white head, smells of light basement, yeast, burnt brown sugar, raisins and a butter. Taste is the same with light bitterness and a yeast and malt forward smash. Only slightly oily mouthfeel, I was actually hoping it would be a little bit thicker. Overall a fine beer from a pretty fine brewery.

Sampled years ago but the rating somehow got removed. Dark cherry-cola pour with an eggshell crown. Bready, biscuity, yeasty, sweet with raisin and plum. Meh.

2010 (4 and half years old) 750 ml bottle.... wow I know one thing about that beer ... let it age at least 3 years old !!! dark hazy redish/amber color . not as much of an head than a young one but that’s what I would expect from a 4 years old beer. the caramel clove smell is a bit more shy but more complex and much more enjoyable. the taste is amazing, very grainy, no bitterness at all, the alcohol is absent from the taste. The first glass feels very delicate(since the yeast is all at the bottom of the bottle)the second one is very different. much more tasty and mellow, unibroue’s yeast age so well. very rich sweetness! wow. one of Unibroue’s flagpole since the start!! what is amazing with this beer is that you can match it with almost any kind of food ! cheers
