COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Poured from bottle. Aroma of fruity citrus. Pours a cloudy dark red. Light to medium sour taste. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, with an astringent finish. A very good example of the style.

Bottle. 4/7/15 BB date. Appearance: Dark ruby red, mostly clear, with an off white foam head. Aroma: Underlying bready, toasted malt, dominated by strong, spicy yeast esters of prune, apple, and pear. Taste: Explosion of fruity esters of prune, figs, and pears. Spicy clove. Bready and toasted malt is there, but take a backseat to the yeast. Mouthfeel: Medium body with high carbonation and a strong alcohol warmth. Finish: A sticky maltiness lingers with pear esters. Overall: Robust, very estery dubbel style. Tons of dark fruit flavor

Bottle share at Evernote. Overall notes of candied malts, raisins, sorghum, molasses. A bit too cloying and sweet for me.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Newport News, VA. Murky brownish-orange pour with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and light fruit. Great, well-balanced, taste of plums, brown sugar, ginger, and cloves. Moderate alcohol warming. A great Belgian-style ale.

Served in a tulip glass cool, not cold, from a 750ml bottle. Definitely a spicy/fruity, sweet aroma. I cannot discern any banana, as other reviewers have noted, There’s an unusual hoppy note that I recognize from other Belgians. A repeat purchase!

Can’t remember if in bottle or tap. Warm and spiced but not over the top. Not super thick like a quad.

Pours slightly cloudy amber with small-medium off-white head that reduces to attractive skim but doesn’t leave lacing. Especially closer to room temperature, the nose ranges through apple, banana, clove, pepper, caramel, dough. On the palate, there’s also orange oil, and the peppery alcohol cuts the sweetness. Creamy medium body with alcohol heat slightly drying the finish. I don’t know how these Québécois do it, but this is another argument that Canada is the New World home of Belgian _ that is, great _ beers. Pours clear pale to medium amber with one finger of pillowy off-white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, no lacing. (4/5) Nose is banana and cloves, doughy yeast, stone fruit, caramel malt. (8/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (8/10) Medium body, lively carbonation, off-dry lingering spicy finish with a moderate alcohol warming. (4/5) Not a lot to say about this - a true classic, and one of the best Belgians outside of Belgium. Smooth and drinkable despite the higher ABV, which manifests as a pleasant warming. (16/20)
