COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Pours a very hazy, nearly opaque walnut with an off-white head that leaves a nice soft blanket atop. The head retains very well and has a very small bubble composition. The aroma has the ever familiar banana and clove aroma of hefe/wit yeast, but with the dark fruit and leathery aroma of a Trappist yeast. There is also some bready and caramel like malt along with very faint hops and peppery spices. Mostly sweet at first, the flavors are what you would expect from the aroma. Toffee and dark fruit with some yeast at first, fading into a soft nothingness. The mouthfeel is perfect. Light and rich at the same time, with quiet but busy carbonation. There is a small amount of alcohol on the end.

750 mL bottle from Pacific Liquor in North Park (San Diego, CA). Pours a dark amber color, bordering on brown. Three fingers of white head dissipates to a consistent one centimeter. Strong aroma of yeast also has musty/dusty, wood, and some spice -- an altogether "earthy" aroma. Flavor is very complex and has a lot going on including sweet caramel maltiness, various fruit flavors (berry, raisin), and nice spice. Great finish with notes of caramel and bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is very well balanced and any indication of alcohol is completely absent. Another excellent one from Unibroue!

Lovely large bottle and the usual attractive Unibroue label. This poured with a dark red colour and a lively, large foamy head that left some nice lacing. Aroma was fruity with a hint of yeast. Taste was simply delicious, being fruity and smooth with the high ABV lurking in the background.

12 oz bottle in belgian beer glass. Pours with a nice 2 finger head and the lace lasts forever--beautiful and silky smooth. smells funky good. Appearance is a cider brown with the lace that appears w/ clean white tiny bubbles. Taste is so smooth, belgian yeast taste that is well integrated-- not over-powering, sour notes, fruity hops, perfect dryness and moderate bitterness. 8% incredibly well masked. developing finish of figs, dates--warming a tasty. Chronic.

Easy poor and well carbonated. Very dark amber with a thin head that replenishes itself for several minutes - helps the beer give off a very nice malt aroma with a slight yeast behind it. Nice spicy hop taste is combined with a bubbly and dry palate. Good ABV and the malt aftertaste isn’t bad either.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Delirium Tremens glass. Best before 09-23-12 printed on bottle. Appearance: Pours a hazy chocolate brown with a good amount of carbonation bubbles and a 1-2 finger fluffy off-white head. Nice head retention. Very solid lacing throughout. Smell: Belgian yeast with caramel malt and a hint of dried fruits. Taste: Sweet dried fruit with a hint of caramel up front then spices clove in the middle followed by phenols and a mild hoppy bitterness at the finish. Aftertaste is a mix of dried fruit and malt. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a high amount of carbonation. Drinkability: Very high drinkability. You don’t really notice the alcohol at all so this one could very well sneak up on you. Overall: Excellent beer overall. The flavor is delicious and the mouthfeel is outstanding. This Canadian brew is as good as any Belgian I’ve tried. I would very highly recommend this

Pours a deep cloudy ruby color with a thick two-finger near white head. Head retention was very respectable with noticeable lacing. The nose for this brew is very sweet. I detect an earthy clove-like smell, some sweet fruitiness, some fairly potent yeast-funk, with a slightly bitter finish. This aroma is complex and inviting. The taste of the beer is strong and very rich, in other words, it is what you expect from the nose. Flavors are malty with evident citrus notes. Hints of berries or fruitiness come through with a dry partially bitter finish. The mouthfeel is more assertive than I was anticipating for the style. It goes down very smooth given the ABV and gives your tongue a nice tickle. The Belgian characteristics of this beer are up front and center and come through the bountiful aroma and flavor profile. None of this comes across as over the top though. Overall, this is an absolutely exceptional product.

Dark golden pour. Beautiful beer. Very enjoyable. Light fruit aromas with a sour aftertaste but still drinkable. Will come back for more.
