COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Bottle. Pours a hazy brown color with lots of meringue head that has staying power. Aroma is vegetal with distinct belgian pepperiness. Flavor is a dry, mellow sweetness. Notes of dried fruit are subtle. Nice dryness and great carbonation.

What can I say, I just tried this finally after heavily enjoying the Unibroue white beer (Blanche de Chambly) and the 8% Alcohol rating had me a little skeptical of it. Pours an incredibly rich and cloudy amber/red color, a sightly yellow head, and wonderful aromas of spice. Tastes like coriander and some sweet fruit in the background, slightly spicy, all around superb. I can’t tell you how surprised I am to be enjoying this as much as I am. Will be purchasing again ASAP. Can’t wait to try Trois Pistoles and Fin du Monde next. 4/5

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2010 A terrific beer. This, while being a belgian-type ale, appeals to those of us who enjoy the qualities of British ales - while remaining faithful to the complexity, thickness, and malty sweetness of a belgian double. This is one of Unibroue’s best offerings.

On tap at the Trion. I’ve had it many times from the bottle (and loved it), but this belgian strong is just amazing from the tap! Great malty nose, sweet taste, and creamy finish that just draws the malt lover deeper and deeper into a sublime state of revelation. One of my favorite beers from Unibrau, and I can never get tired of drinking this (truly, session - belgian strong) beer!

Pours a brandy brown with a thin brown ringed head. Aroma of spices and fruit. Taste is lightly carbonated with flavors of apples, yeast, sweet malts and light spice. Finish is a nice clingy bitterness

Exceptionally well balanced for a strong ale. Sweet and rich tasting without being too thick or cocoa-like. I have nothing else to add that the other 1800 reviewers haven’t already said.

Well this is one big step above Labatt!!!! This brew poured up a deep dark amber colored body with a white frothy head with great retention and loads of lacing. Aromas of yeast, sweet malts, spices (cloves, etc.), bananas. Flavors of the same with even a hint of made-from-scratch fresh-baked biscuits. Medium-bodied, good carbonation, velvety smooth with a dry, yeast-filled finish and aftertaste. Smoked salmon would be my choice to pair up with this brew.
