COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

As always with Unibroue, a great all-round beer. The taste is the best characteristic--lots of fruity notes, and very drinkable. Good stuff, not quite as good as Trois Pistoles, but good.

Man I love this beer! Pours a rich reddish brown with a with a thick rocky head. The aromas are pungent and beautiful orangepeel, corriander, belgian yeast, sweet maltiness and black pepper. The carbonation is explosive at lower temperatures and masks some of the flavours so this beer is much better as it warms, flavours of black pepper, corriander orange peel, a real big maltiness and just enough alcohol to make you feel warm when you’ve knocked off the 750ml by your self.Date on cork 03/01.

34 ml bottle pre-sleeman. amber copper color with a momentous head. aromas of orange, clove. belgian yeast, pepper, hops, apricot perhaps? spritzy mouthfeel with hot peppery spice flavors. coriander orange, apricot or peach. dry ending with some bitterness. has some of the characteristics of duvel in the dry, fruity, champagne like simmilarities. very good.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2005 Had this in Toronto on tap and recently in the corked bomber bottle. Fantastic rich malt flavor in this belgian style ale. Hilarious label art of the flying canoe. Reddish-brown in color. High alcohol. Grab a bottle whenever you see it and it gets better with age.

Interesting brew. Pours a cloudy caramel coloured body, with a thin beige head that just barely lurks around the edge of the glass. Aromas are fruity. Pear and apple come to mind. Also a slight spice aromas is present. Very appealing. Taste is of pears, and slightly spicy. Full bodied and smooth. A pleasure to drink. Unibroue certainly makes a great beer.

100th review. beer pours with Unibroue's typical lively CO2, forming a large white head that slowly dissipates into a nice 1/2" ring. nose is very spicy, with phenol/alcohol notes combining with a sweet maltiness and perhaps some added spice (coriander?). flavor is initially all spice, followed by a pleasant maltiness and backed up with an alcohol burn (not an unpleasant one). The mouthfeel is quite light and lively, with a mild coating of malt. a really good beer, and one that develops as you drink it.

On tap, Map Room Chicago. Wow. Deep, deep brownish red color. Small head due to the body density. Could have been cloying, but the complexity makes you come back for more. Sweet date, fig, and underlying low level bitterness. Outstanding from a hop head’s perspective.
