4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 foduck (324) - Denton, Texas, USA - JUL 3, 2002
My bottle gushed. Typical dubbel aroma, spicy and ’woody’. Brownish orange color. Good head retention. Excellent flavor, a kind of spicy/fruity/woody profile. First I get this kind of apple/pear flavor which quickly fades and is followed by the woody spiciness. At first I wasn’t impressed with this but as I take a few more sips I begin to feel its depth. Will Re-Rate again later hopefully with a bottle that doesn’t gush.

This is a great beer! I’ve never tasted anything like it, it had a spicey kind of apple cider taste to it I loved it can’t wait to go to the main land again to stock up on this one!

UPDATED: JUL 9, 2005 Second independent rating: 5/5/8/5/16 = 3.9, down from 7/5/8/4/18 = 4.2. Appearance a big strong point here. Dark ruby/maroon with nice big bubbly, then frothy, white head. Light grassy aroma. Flavor of candied fruits, grapes perhaps. Goes down ultra-smooth and frothy.
Original commentary: Dee-lish. Apricot or what have you in the aroma, and some kind of incomparable cloudy red-brown color with some enticing, guiltily pleasing head foam retention. Some beers just never have a chance to compare to the lustily alluring appearance of this she-devil, it’s just not fair. It’s not. I mean, this is what appearance is supposed to be all about. Best. Ever. The rest isn’t at all bad, not in the slightest bit. Apricot or whatever it is reasserts itself in the flavor profile, but I’m too focused on this outrageous appearance profile to care. Soft and creamy mouthfeel ought to be outlawed in these parts. Oh bliss, heaven was heaven, gorgeousness and gorgeosity and all that. Gravity all nonsense now. Bliss was it to be alive, but to be young was nearly heaven. I’m drunk approx. 2/3 off my keister and still enjoying Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother.

Obviously this brewery knows what they’re doing. La Maudite is a great tasting beer that lives up to its evil label - it will bring out the devil in you. Not bitter, not too sweet, apple, slight fig, carmel, are all good flavors to describe this beer. Excellent.

The more I drink it the more I like it. Well balanced and very enjoyable.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2004 Spicy scent, slight cider smell - crisp apples. Colour is dirty reddish-brown. Earthy. Small head, slightly cloudy. Taste has spice to it, slightly bitter but with a fine malty finish. Nice. My first Belgium-style strong ale and I like it very much. My second Unibroue (next to Blanche de Chambly) and I think it is excellent.
4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Diego (79) - San Diego, California, USA - JAN 22, 2003
Excellent aroma and body. Very smooth almost a velvety complexion to this fine brew-ha-ha. Underated. This is an excellent beer and well worth drinking by the six-pack, I would recommend it to all of my friends without reservation. A delicious sort of sweet finish to it makes it a tasty treat.

This beer poured a copper amber color and formed a white bubbly head that left trace lace. A small amount of carbonation is present. An aroma of malt, caramel and spices. A flavor of malt, caramel, citrus and some spice. The finish is a touch sweet, yet astrigent. A nice Belgian.
