COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2006 Bottle best before 3-25-07. Dirty muddy brown with 1 finger off white head. Huge dark fruit aroma, (prune/fig), hints of banana, very yeasty with faint alcohol in the background. Flavor again very yeasty with tons of fruit, mostly prune and banana, faint spice towards the finish. Great smooth/oily mouthfeel. Probably the smoothest Unibroue I’ve had, maybe the age has mellowed the carbonation a bit. Well done.

Brassy-brown cloudy color, big rich head, aroma of sweet orchard fruit and yeast. Lovely palate, full and rich, golden raisins and rich bread with layers of spice and ripe orchard fruit, smooth and complex, a beautiful experience.

Pours a murky brown, with a rocky, off-white head, which dissipated slowly. The aroma is a bit sour, like other Belgian Strong Ales I’ve tried. The flavor is fruity, with hints of pear, a bit of alcohol, and just a hint of bitterness in the finish. Another excellent offering from Unibroue!

Rich whipped cream head atop a hazy, burnt orange ale. So it begins. The aroma and taste are full of sweet maltiness and alcoholic bite. The end delivers some bitterness but more pepper. It’s a friendlier than other Belgian strong ales I’ve sampled but no less delightful.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2005 Draught. at BeerBistro. Poured a darkish, hazy, somewhat bubbly, copper-amber with a decent slightly off-white head. Aroma was initially alcohol-sharp, giving way to an active melange of yeast, sweetish roast malt, spices (coriander), and citrusy hop notes. Flavour followed the nose, but introduced tart berry fruit, more malty, a bit of woodiness, and the alcohol reasserted itself. Mouthfeel was a bit fizzy and alcoholic - starts lively and somewhat sweet, finishes slow and more balanced, but not harsh or bitter. I’ve had vintage (2 & 3 years old) Maudite on tap before, and it develops more complexity with age - a very good strong beer, one of Unibroue’s best main sequence beers.

on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Winston. halleluah!!! get it while it lasts (for a limited time only). I’m so excited MM has Unibroue b/c ever since the NYC brew festival I can’t get enough of this brewery. they are so nice and the beers so complex and absolutely fantastic and unique. pours a nice amber body with a large, lasting egg-shell yellow-tinted white head that leaves considerable lacing. smells fruity and spicy. Apples, cinnamon, spice. Tastes fruity too. almost like plum cake or fruit cake. raisins, orange, cinnamon, alcohol and spiciness. florals peek out at the beginning. tastes sweeter towards the finish. caramel. very smooth palate. decent carbonation. um helloooooo? delicious.
