COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

“distinctive and complex” I concur. The alcohol isn’t masked by a very light floral hop taste. Deep caramel color with a distinct banana and a moderate spice. A delightful creamy and rich mouthfeel with high notes of alcohol gaining as you move toward the bottle of the bottle. I look forward to my next ride on the flying canoe.

from 750ml bottle - need to find my notes from the Unibroue tasting at my local supermarket. Always a favorite at my house.

Bottle. Pours deep amber with a thick, frothy, beige head. Aroma of raisins, roasted malt, spice, and hints of apple. Full body, with a heavy, bold finish. Another outstanding Belgian Strong from Unibroue. Party on Wayne! Party on Garth!

Poured an amber gold color with a decently sized frothy head. A sweet smell with fruit and yeast coming through. Sweet taste, a lot going on with the taste, toffee and caramel come to mind. Alcohol coming through a bit also. Great beer, very refreshing and balanced.

Pours a murky dark copper colour with a thin white head. Smells of soft fruit, cloves, cinnamon and yeast. Tastes of soft over-riped fruits, some sour apple cloves, cinnamon and the distinct unibroue yeast taste. Good complex beer

A classic, indeed. I remember that I didn’t like this beer in the early 90’s; it was too strong, spicy and strange for my commercial beer tastebuds. It’s been now maybe two years that I really appreciate strong beers but I never re-tasted the Maudite until recently. And God was I surprised!. I think my uncle had kept it for several months in its refrigerator; I know it’s not the beer way of cellaring but it was deliciously thick and caramel sweet, with layers of complexity, with spices, fruits and moderate bitterness. I read it has a five years aging potential. Great, but the important think not to forget to enjoy those strong Unibroue beers: LET IT WARM!

750ml bottle from Pinch poured into my Chimay Trappist glass. Pours a clear dark amber with about 1 finger of white head. Aroma of plum, candied sugar and dark fermented fruit. Taste is very lightly sour and light sweet. Taste of candied sugar and dark fruits. Full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long sweet finish. Overall, very good. I will absolutely drink this again, especially because it was only 6 bucks for a 750ml bottle.
