COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

12 oz bottle. Tastes of banana, clove, candy sugar, and nutmeg. Nice warming sensation as it goes down without being too strong of an alcohol taste. Aftertaste is very pleasant as its not too sticky.

Bottle from Harvest Market, Bedford NH. Aroma is Belgian yeast, bready malt. Appearance is hazy red orange-brown with good sparkle, two finger head that shrinks but persists and negligible lacing. Taste is similar to nose, yeasty fruity esters. Palate is medium bodied with slightly slick texture and lively carbonation, fairly dry finish as with the taste.

I remember drinking this beer while drinking the afternoon into evening at a whiskey bar in Quebec City & thinking this was pretty damn fine & unlike anything else I had tried. Of course that was in the mid-90s when we thought Creemore & Sleeman were something special. Fast forward many years -- & many, many beers -- & how does this beer hold up in the hipster beer nerd 2010’s? Fancy dining table wood body with a mushy slab of foam on tap. Lots of sugar on the tongue, a bit of booze in the back & a very prickly carbonation. Has the same tired yeast profile of the other brews on their stable. Somewhat of a classic, but not really my favourite on the menu.

Pours a hazy brown color, topped with a decent off-white frothy head. Aroma is malty with caramel, some yeasty notes and spices. Taste is sweet at the start and quite malty, some yeasty notes and alcohol in the body, but not too bad. Not a bad one, passable and quite strong feel to it.

Poured from bottle. Aroma of fruity citrus. Pours a cloudy dark red. Light to medium sour taste. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, with an astringent finish. A very good example of the style.

Bottle. 4/7/15 BB date. Appearance: Dark ruby red, mostly clear, with an off white foam head. Aroma: Underlying bready, toasted malt, dominated by strong, spicy yeast esters of prune, apple, and pear. Taste: Explosion of fruity esters of prune, figs, and pears. Spicy clove. Bready and toasted malt is there, but take a backseat to the yeast. Mouthfeel: Medium body with high carbonation and a strong alcohol warmth. Finish: A sticky maltiness lingers with pear esters. Overall: Robust, very estery dubbel style. Tons of dark fruit flavor

Bottle share at Evernote. Overall notes of candied malts, raisins, sorghum, molasses. A bit too cloying and sweet for me.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Newport News, VA. Murky brownish-orange pour with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and light fruit. Great, well-balanced, taste of plums, brown sugar, ginger, and cloves. Moderate alcohol warming. A great Belgian-style ale.

Served in a tulip glass cool, not cold, from a 750ml bottle. Definitely a spicy/fruity, sweet aroma. I cannot discern any banana, as other reviewers have noted, There’s an unusual hoppy note that I recognize from other Belgians. A repeat purchase!
