COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Dark red-brown body, moderate off-white head, spotty lacing. Nose is peppery yeast, dark fruits, and mellow caramel. Flavor focuses a bit more on the fruity malts than the yeast (when compared to the nose). Pleasant and evolving flavor profile. Medium bodied, mellow but appropriate carbonation, clean finish.

Appearance is dark raw honey with a small off white head with heavy lacing left around the glass. Smells floral and wheaty with a bit of funk mixed in. Taste is leaves, lemon with a leather aftertaste. The carbonation was smooth and light medium. Eh....not my favorite from Unibroue.

Aroma: yeast, light caramel notes, hay. Appearance: hazy dark brown, medium frothy beige head. Taste: light sweet. Palate: sweet getting stronger, alcohol, but not unpleasant, malts, caramel, bread, light carbonation, average-long finish. Overall: fantastic Belgian Strong Ale, very well balanced, not too sweet. Bottle from Drinks of the World Bern HB, Switzerland.

750 ml bottle, pours cloudy orange-amber with almost no head. Aroma of red raspberries, caramel malt, dark bread, and somewhat woody. This is very dry, similar to a red wine in the flavor and palate. Lightly sweet, almost no bitterness or hop presence, slightly sour and earthy. Significant ethanol presence. This is by far the least favorite brew that Iíve had from Unibroue. Kind of watery for being 8% abv. Pretty boring, to be honest, donít agree with most of the reviews here.

If Iím honest, this is the first letdown from the unibroue beers that I have tried. Maybe itís the bottle I got? No head at all. Had a bit of an underwhelming mouthfeel and the taste felt like it took awhile to kick in with each sip. Didnít taste strong. Some lemony citrus that I found that was pretty cool, but all around this is the weakest unibroue so far. Still decent, but worse than the others I will rerate with another bottle whenever

12 oz bottle purchased at Hy-Vee Muscatine ($3) and poured into a globe glass at home. Brown, dark amber and hazy appearance with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, esters, dark malts, spices, clove, coriander and floral hops. Similar flavor, malty, mildly sweet, mildly spiced, lightly bitter and fruity with hints of orange peel. Medium body, a little thin, soft and smooth with a crisp, lingering, light hoppy finish. Pretty pleasant and easy to drink.

750 to Unibroue tulip! The beer pours a cloudy darkish amber with a small white head. The aroma is very much like a saison with elements of orange, pepper, spice, coriander, lemon and wheat. Fruity and estery, itís quite aromatic. Taste mirrors the aroma quite well...definite bitterness which could be because of an orange peel addition and there are notes of coriander too. Caramel malt flavours are present and are balanced against noble hops. The flavour is quite fruity, no doubt a contribution from the yeast. Palate is long lasting and the mouthfeel is medium. CO2 is also medium...and the flavours evolve from sweet/sour/bitter, leaving a bitter finish. Overall...another winner from Unibroue.

A bit soapy flavor. Bad mouthfeel watered down. Light grape taste and aroma. Medium lasting head. Average. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 0.33l. Cloudy orange amber color with medium creamy off-white head and sparkling appearance. Aroma of yeast, caramel, dark fruits and alcohol. Taste starts with sweet and rich malt, follows by alcohol and fruity freshness, warming and spicy mouthfeel, while finish is light bitter. Full body, thick texture and average natural carbonation in palate. Damn good...

Large bottle from Haskells. Hazy mahogany color. Aroma is very pleasant. Sweet and dark fruit definitely prevalent. A really interesting Belgian-esque ale. Has sour elements and a heavy alcohol presence. Strong mouthfeel with near effervescence. Really enjoy this beer and will be sure to seek it out again.
