aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA Oct 12, 2006 This beer really is "something else". Big cinnamon, nutmeg and clove flavors prdominate with an acid and lactic chracter of ripe cherries and prunes. Rich full mouthfeel and a tart sour finish. MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 29, 2006 I still have the empty bottle of this ony my shelf. Thaks to my brother Stegosaurus who drank it with me got a buzz and then cut my hair (wasn’t a wise move) Poured amber an an immediate fruit aroma filled the air, cheery smelling. No head at all. Needs to be served at room temp. It was a bit fruity for my taste but not bad. I lied it. feedmec00kies (49), New York, New York, USA Sep 19, 2006 wow, this was really interesting. orangey reddish (looks like water after you boil beets in it) and no head. aroma of sour cherries, a little funkiness, and spices... cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves.. well actually, it smells a lot like chinese five-spice powder. tasted like sour cherries, orange peels, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, a bit of damp wood and red wine. a bit of a cloying sweetness. i drank it at around room temperature, though i wish i had tried it hot. i think it would be especially nice to drink in colder weather. DuffMan (2719), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Sep 1, 2006 This pours very unbeer-like. Orange-red amber with no head at all. Very little carbonation to speak of. Cherry mash aroma, cidery. Tart sour cherry flavours with sweet Christmas spice notes. The alcohol is completely hidden. Sweet but not sticky or sickening. An excellent example of the style. daalamar (403), bardstown, Kentucky, USA Aug 29, 2006 Murky brown/red color with no head. Aroma is spiced cherries, candied cherried, rotten cherries and more cherries. Flavor is exactly the same with a tart finish. I suppose that if that is what this is supposed to be then they did it well, however rating on my taste this dosn’t do it for me. One dimentional and if you are on the fence as to liking cherries or not this beer will decide. awaller05 (300), Sharon, Wisconsin, USA Aug 27, 2006 Vintage 2002: Opened the beer after letting it sit out for an hour to get room temp . Poured a hazy brown with little head to offer. I was surprised by the smell as I smelled the cherries and then to my surprise I caught a whiff of cinnamon. I took the initial taste and found the taste to be quite good, and really caught the cinnamon flavor. Bottle disappeared to quick and I wish I had another. Brigadier (1212), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Aug 22, 2006 500 ml bottle (2002 vintage)
I was suprised to see this on the shelves at Steve’s so I thought I would give
it a try. Unibroue has never made any terrible beers (that I have sampled)
but they aren’t exactly world beaters either. At $6.99 I feel like it was
mildly overpriced; still, at some point I would like to pick up another
bottle to try warm.
Aroma / Appearance - There really is not much going on with the nose.
I sampled it near room temperature as suggested on the label to get the
maximum nose. All I detected were cherries, nutmeg, berries, cinnamon and
a trace of black pepper. The body was burgandy red and inert. There was
absolutely no head at all and only a hint of lacing.
Flavor / Palate - Once I took a sip, this beer took on a new dimension.
It is very unusual - if I had to sum it up it tastes more like a mulled wine
than a cherry beer. Still, obvious traces of cherry pie, vanilla and
chocolate brownies open introduced me to the mysteries of my pour. Soon
afterwards the spicy notes revealed themselves in the guise of cinnamon and
corriander. The more sips I took the more obvious the spices become until
towards the end of the bottle it felt less like a beer and more like a mulled
holiday wine. The finish was tart and slightly sour. It is fairly unique
but I am unlikely to rush out and pick up more than one more bottle. blankboy (3157), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 21, 2006 Bottle shared with friends. Vintage 2002. Served on ice. Pours a slightly hazy amber-red with no carbonation or head at all. Very pleasant aroma of sweet and tart cherries, spices (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and more) and hints of sweet malt and yeast. Initial thought upon tasting is "this tastes like a cherry cider". Flavour of lots of tart cherries with the aforementioned spices -- moderately sweet but never cloying. Hides the alcohol very well. Medium bodied. A truly unique and enjoyable beer -- luckily I still have 4 more bottles and I look forward to rating it mulled as well.
