papajohn (1054), San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA Dec 30, 2005 Bottle 2002 vintage: Color is cherry amber with only a wisp of foam. Aroma is sweet cherry and alcohol like a cherry brandy. Flavor is cherry sweet, some spice, a sharp tartness and a long dry finish. Smooth medium mouth feel. Ughsmash (3978), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Dec 25, 2005 2002 500ml bottle. First glass was at room temperature... Clear, sparkly rosy-amber pour with zero head. Cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet cherries, and apple peel were oh-so-enticing in the aroma. Flavor followed the aroma quite nicely... the spices had the right concentration and placement to nicely accompany the sweet fruit flavors. Mildly tart cherry notes surrounded the tongue. Finish felt like a spiced tea with flavors of cherry and pie spices... left sticky-sweet cherries on the lips.
Tried this heated up as well... the heat thinned out the body a bit, and released some alcohol in the aroma and flavor. Flavors were not as distinct as at room temp. Certainly an enjoyable brew under both conditions, but the room temperature lets you fully grasp the depth and complexity of this fine brew. ehhdayton (1113), USA Dec 23, 2005 Had this beer sipping hot as recommended and was pleasently surprised. The aroma had nice overtones of cherry with the spices coming through quite nicely. The color was light pinkish with a bubbly pink head. The taste was of spices, much like in a mulled cider, and cherry. hayduke (1619), Eureka, California, USA Dec 20, 2005 Bottle. Dark orange with no head. Lots of cherry. In fact while I had a sense there were other flavors it was difficult to get past the cherry flavor. Excellent nose. Very nice to drink, however overpriced. Emil (6075), Copenhagen, Denmark Dec 20, 2005 Bottle. Served Cold, Orange red colour with no head. Marzipan, cherry, cinnamon, cardemom aroma and a very sweet marzipan, cherry, cinnamon taste. Medium to full body with a sweet finish.
Served Warm, 4-3-5-3-9 ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Dec 19, 2005 Served warm, clear deep reddish with a small white head. Unbalanced aroma with a cherry fruityness and a very evident alcohol note. Nice sweet fruity flavor, lots of berries and a faint spicyness. Light tart finish. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Dec 17, 2005 Updated: Apr 25, 2007Bottle (500ml 2004 vintage). Shared with David B at Volo. Been looking forward to this since the weather got cold again - served at approximately 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Poured clear mahogany with a large quick-diminishing white fizzy head. Aroma - God I love this stuff - redolent with fresh sour cherry, very mild sweet malt backing, waves of allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon - the tartness of the cherries balances the sweetness nicely. Taste follows the nose, even more cherry and cinnamon, and quite noticeable alcohol. Palate is thick and sticky with a long sweet/tart finish - my choice over mulled wine as a winter warmer. I will have to try this cold one day. Skinnyviking (4142), Copenhagen, Denmark Dec 10, 2005 Bottle. No head. Red golden body. Cherries and spices. An alternative to gloegg which I also do not like. Served chilled might be a good idea.
