sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Oct 26, 2005 Capping off a long evening. Tasted 10/14 after six kinds of smoked beers. 750 ml and of course, warm. Mulled? Biscuits, sugar, resiny raisins, apples, cherries, alcohol nose. Deep ruby hue. Cinnamon also in the nose. Warm cherries, medicinal, tart and sour mix. Smooth flaovr and a great winter warmer. jimhilt (1658), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Oct 14, 2005 Hardly any carbonation and no head or lace. Strong fruit nose and this is made with cheeries that have been soaked in ale but it tasted like fermented raisins. A nice seasonal. Pricey at $6.99 for 500ml. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Oct 11, 2005 500 ml bottle 2002 ed. I sampled this beer using all three of the suggested serving methods. First I tired it over ice while the chilled bottle was mulling, and another sample was room temperturizing. Not bad. Would make a very nice summer desert drink. Alchol was very evident. Very sweet and vinous. Then I tried the mulled sample. I sipped it gingerly to avoid burning the tongue. The head does show up when heated. That was neat. Alcohol was still very evident, and the flavor was way kicked up. Lots of cherries and malt. Now I am tempted to try all my favorite beers hot... No, maybe not. Then I tired the room temperture sample. Not nearly as exciting. Many of the flavors were hidden. Including the Alcohol. Where did it go? Interesting. Still very tasty, but I think I will take it hot next time. SoLan (1365), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 7, 2005 2002. Light brown/amber/off-red. No head. Cherries and sour yeast in the aroma, also some spice like nutmeg or gingerbread. Spiced cherries and subtle yeast flavor. No carbonation. Some bubbles would be good if drinking this at room or cellar temp. Juice or sweet wine like body. I’d like to try one mulled-this flat one would have been good warmed. pootzboy (1029), Hawgville, Ontario, Canada Oct 4, 2005 Bottled(2002 edition)
Poured flat into the flute...no cap what so ever..brilliant reddish-copper color. Nose fills with tart cherry, cinnamon, spices slight wiffs of bread. Sweet to the taste, spicey ( cinnamon/ginger/ white pepper) over tart cherry and light musty malt tastes...very nice winter drink.... flat and fruity enough that it could almost be served mulled like a spiced cider.
A good fruit ale. Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA Sep 13, 2005 2002 Bottle. Poured flat. No CO2 at all. Not "a little bit of CO2". NO CO2. Nose is sour cherry and malt. Taste-ginger, cherry, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, ginger, clove, ginger, and some slight sour. Tastes like a cherry iced ginger snap. Much better than I thought it would be. Fantomas23 (463), Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA Sep 11, 2005 For my 100th rating, I decided to do something that I can review multiple ways. Quelque Chose (2002) seemed a natural choice since it can be enjoyed on ice, at room temperature or warmed up like a mulled wine. Absolutely no head. Looks like apple juice. First the iced version: The cold downplays any aroma and takes a hit at any alcoholic warmth that might be there. It’s certainly refreshing with a pleasing tartness on the finish. At room temperature: Smells like cherry licorice nibs. Has more discernible young red wine characteristics, like a Beaujolais Nouveau. Sweet, but not cloyingly. Cinnamon stick, star anise, all-spice, nutmeg. Tingly on the tip of the tongue and finishing dry. The spiced cherry flavor lingers on and on, which is a very good thing. Finally served sipping warm: I don’t claim to know what heating does to the chemistry of this beer, but it poured with a head, not much of one but there was definitely some foaming. The color also deepened in redness. Whisps of alcohol as it coats the tongue. The dryness is also accentuated. Definitely the way to serve this on a cold December night. Overall: A wonderfully versatile brew. I can’t see going wrong with any of the varied ways to serve. My personal favorite is warmed. For Canada, this certainly makes up for Bryan Adams. 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA Aug 30, 2005 Bottle (2002): Served hot by mattbob. Not your typical rate, served hot, ey? Reddish in color, small off-white head, foamed out the top as the bottled heated up, with spotty lacing. Nice mulled wine like aroma, except it being cherries instead of grapes. Flavor was very smooth, cherry was not as strong as I remembered. Very clean and enjoyable. Cellar temp I did not like, but this stuff warmed is very enjoyable. Next time I gotta try it o the rocks. Highly recommended. I know what I might be serving guests at Christmas!
