3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750mL, corked and caged, BB 03-06-16. Nose is sweet and malty, somewhat spicy, with that great and easily identifiable Unibroue yeast. Doesn’t gush, doesn’t even move a millimeter, but the foamy, noisy off-white head occupies about 90% of the glass even on a careful pour; resolves to an orange-leaning, clear golden body with somewhat above-average carbonation. Thin body but waves of malt and some above average complexity, very light darker thrusts of malt with heather and lavender in the background, and I might even imagine some spruce or juniper, but at this point I’m imagining a different beer. No alcohol, smooth and easy-going, crisp and refreshing with light berries and fainter cherries, but no sign of smoke. Another good one, if misleading.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap half pint at Gilly's Beer & Fine Wine in Rockville, MD.
Very hazy, dusty amber with a small off-white head and sparse lacing. (Interestingly, the bottled version I tried in Quebec had an enormous head and nice lacing.)
Aroma of light fruit, coriander, caramel, lemon, yeast, spice and orange.
Taste of caramel, coriander, lemon, orange, apple, yeast and mild spices.
Medium/light body and medium/high carbonation with a slightly foamy mouthfeel.
I'm not detecting much smoke here, but it is still a rather nice, fruity Belgian pale ale.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 3/6/2016. Pours lightly hazy deep orange copper color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big peach, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, clove, caramel, toast, bread, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of apricot, peach, pear, apple, light banana, clove, caramel, toast, bread, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of peach, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, clove, caramel, toast, bread, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian pale ale. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nowhere near enough smoke for a smoked beer but I still really liked it. Fruit, yeast and spices over a caramel malt backbone.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Disappointing. First, I don’t get any smoke from the smoked whisky malt. I’m not sure what I get from that. Spices? Maybe a bit of coriander and white pepper. It’s malty but not sweet. Not a light as many Belgian pales, but also with not as much yeast flavor (from a brewery whose yeast is usually not very subtle). It feels like a bit much for me to knock down despite relatively low ABV and light taste.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Appearance: cloudy cola brown, with a huge, creamy/frothy light tan head and generous lacing. Aroma: malty, like a scotch ale, with toffee, caramel, a hint of smoke and earth, some leather. Taste: malty and sweet, but lightly so, with toffee, caramel, a hint of melon, and just a touch of smoky wood. Finish: that great Unibroue yeast comes through, balancing the slightly sweet malt. Notes: Like a light, slightly smoked scotch ale. Really a treat to find something from Unibroue I hadn’t had before.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
75cl bottle (best by 3/6/2016) into Le Dimpled Guinness - whiskey, ales and smoke? I’m stoked! Nose is the unmistakable Unibroue funk but no smoke. Hum. Sip adds no smoke. How is this a smoked ale? It’s basically a Belgian with lots of effervescence. Disappointing to say the least. However, it’s still a decent beer but nothing close to what is advertised. I think the style needs to be reconsidered. The label description says "smoked whiskey malts" but the taste is not the least bit smoky. Did I mention I don’t think this is smoky? Cuz it’s not smoky. Not one bit. Who ever says this is smoky is smoking crack only because there is no way anyone with a right mind would ever suggest this is smoky. Who says this is smoky? Not me.
PS - on my very last sip, I actually got a smoke flavor. Regardless, how is this a smoked beer? It must fall way better into other styles!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Hazy orange-brown colour with a fizzy white head. Orange, coriander, and light lemon and whiskey notes on the nose. A little more whiskey in the flavour, with a mixture of citrus notes, some Belgian yeast, and a lightly spicy finish. Definitely something different and refreshing, but not fantastic.
